It's probably just because it doesn't make a very good contact I bet it works fine once you get a new tailcap.

Kevin i used that same earing on my other laser without the tailcap and it works like the tailcap is on

If you want to spend +$20 to ship it back to Rayfoss for an exchange, go ahead. You could always attempt to replace the diode, but I know those modules are extremely difficult to extract from the host and you may damage the driver board.

I dont know what is wrong with it, seems to be the diode not the driver.
Anyhow i can say with certainty that i dont have the skills nor the tools to extract the diode.
I dont even have another red diode laying round
Oh well, i can just spend the 20$ and hope for the best.
