yellow laser crystals with huge pumper, why not?

I'm sure I'm not the first to have this idea, but why can't we just take the crystal assy from a 594 and put it in front of one of the huge 808nm pumps from a big burner green to get 40 or so mw of yellow? Is it practical and no one wants to cut up their yellow, or would it have a heatsink problem?

I've been pondering this ALOT lately and can't decide if it's worth trying or not....

There is a small problem with that theory, a certain size crystal can only change so much light into anohter wavelength. Think of a cheap greenie for example, you can put more current into the IR diode so the diode puts out more IR, but not much more green will come out. Once a crystal of a certain size reaches "saturation", it won't convert much more 808nm light to whatever other wavelength. This is the same with yellow and all other DPSS lasers.

Furthermore, yellows use huge pump diodes too.The reason for their low power is the process' inefficiency.

greens are 20% and sometimes 35%
blues are 1-3%
and yellows are 1%

1%...thats horrible!!

hope in 2009 we can start getting a higher percentage (and lower prices :p)

My massive argon is much worse at .05% and my small argon is worse yet at .004% ;D. I'm sure that's one reason why so many institutions are switching to DPSS

But if you really want a lot of yellow, why not combine red and green? The likes of the very attainable 250mW with beam combining is out of the question for straight DPSS.

But you're talking about consumption vs output ,right? Green DPSS 20% efficiency refers to 20% 808nm converted to 532nm right? :-/ The power output/consumption ratio would be worse cause the IR diode is not 100% efficient(would be cool though ::)).

What about this laser? http://www.laserglow.com/index.php?vega  Is this laser similar to the RPL running off a 2.5W 808nm LD?  If it was running off a 2W Ir LD at 15mW yellow, that's 0.75% efficiency right?   :-?
