The Yellow Lantern

:worthy:

Well I had always wanted to try the legendary rog8811 yellow build... so after the Titan's Fist (which is almost finally done) I built one, and really learned alot.

One thing is for sure that this is one cool  laser really bright so much fun.

I really researched this build and of course gathered a lot of info using jayrobs yellow build thread and other sources. I tried this build awhile ago and failed miserably, but with the 520nm diode I felt comfortable giving it a try.

I shorted up a mag-lite host to except a 32600 battery to use as a host. I first tried a sAik, but only got as far as the heatsink. I did not have the opportunity to take my pics during the process, for one there was just to much going on.

I decided to use a 300mW 638nm for the "red" only because I was worried I would not be able to keep up with the 520nm with a 650 or 660nm.

I had a microflex laying around so I had it set to top out @650mA later to dial in the yellow I had to turn it down, then up, then down:thinking::p I had the 520nm running on a microboost so yea all Dr. lava up there

The one thing that can be a pain in a build like this is the beam alignment. I tossed around many ideas, I did not want to wonder away to much from the modders theme here and at the same time not to have to use a bunch of goop to hold the beam in place, so here is my solution.
IMAG0548_zps41033a36.jpg

In this pic I used a M3 .50 flat screw and JB-welded 2 M3 nuts on top. After that I used some springs in-between some nylon washers to keep the tension as taut as possible and NOT have that wiggle that disrupts the alignment process.
I tapped the heatsink with M3 threads under the modules. I then used a FS mirror under the 638 diode and a turning mirror sourced from the PHR sled for the blending of the 2 beams under the 520, or center module;).

Sure was fun all that adjusting, but in the end I nailed it and man what a beauty.

I know it doesn't show in the pic, but I have a 594nm CNI and this is totally more yellow at least to my eyes. I even turned down the 638nm diode to get more of the "yellow".

Maybe to much fog:o

I utilized the skinny axis by turning down some cast nylon and "sleeving the host.

I wish I had better camera skillz and all, I'm truly sorry for that it totally takes away from how gorgeous this beam came out.:o Now some things to tell I have a slight issue in the far alignment that the beam specs for the 638 are crap as we all know so after about 50ft you can see the wings come out of the beam, and without a waveplate, I believe my cross shape is there to stay.

Next is to see If combining a couple of 445nm with a waveplate and PBS cube on this set-up would be feasable... only because the ease of alignment given with this screw spring set up.

Here is a vid soo much fog:wave:

Nothing funner than smoking tape with a "ghetto yellow":crackup::crackup: Thanks for looking and have a good day. Get out there and build one:thanks:

That is pretty cool... +rep for a killer project.

You know I would +rep you, but I can't...too much +repping you apparently, but it can never be enough!

Nice innovative build jander. :)
I really like the look of that shortened Mag-Lite!
Also, good work on the adjustable alignment mounts.

BTW - Super intro pic!

Rep ya as soon as I am able.

Man another killer build. That mixture ratio looks great.

Awesome job.. Again!

Thanks for the kind words fellas... I'm having a hard time putting this one down. It's so cool I'm amazed how these home made mounts hold there position I've literally been playing with this monster for a good while now and it still in alignment... after several bump test and normal use.

I used aixiz acrylic lenses at first for the tighter beam, but divergence being my friend I opted to go with the glass 445nm for the 520nm diode and the aixiz red glass for the 638nm 300mW diode.

One thing when testing, I put a dab of loctite gel which is basically superglue on the springs during the fist alignment process was completed just as insurance(also altered the power of the 638 for less mW so I could get even more yellowish tint) but the vapor ruined the lenses and tarnished the heatsink surface, lesson learned there.

I was just going to ask you about the stability of those mounts!
Glad to see that they are holding. Too bad about the lens, super glue vapors are a bitch!
I wonder if regular, removable (green) loctite would do the job?
Any more pics with the yellower tint? :D

Great job man!

You may have inspired me to start thinking about making yellow again... +rep (when the system allows again)

Very cool build, but I bet it was a pain to adjust those optics to get it "just right".
Yellow is not a color you see every day. Kudos :>)

Very cool build, very brilliant idea with the spring!
+1

Jim

I like how you introduced the build, Is this a trend or something :D Anyways I like it a lot as always your work is inspiring and thanks for sharing this ingenious build of yours. +rep if it let me.

Wow awesome build you made there...

Not having those skills myself, i'm eager to buy one from someone on day.. ''dual diode setup''.

:thanks: for sharing...

+1

Cheers, Sm.

That is a beautiful laser, very creative!!! I like the bolt/mirror adjustment, very unique...Kudos!!!

I got some expired UV cure glue from a dentist. Part bottle.
Keep it cool and dark. It cures FAST with a 405 and no fumes.
