If Im running 1250ma's in a 1W would it be safe to assume that I can push 2500ma's into 2W or would perhaps 2250ma's be a better amount.

And without a meter is there anyway to tell it Im driving it two hard.

What diode are you using?

I run snoctony's 2W 808s at 2.8A and haven't had any problems. I get >2W at this current. But it seems like 2.4-2.5 might be healthier. 2.8A is a lot.
I can't say for other brands, though.

I thought the current limit was from the temperature? Do you monitor the temperature?

Not really Ive never felt the diode module even get slightly warm in the copper sink I have it in.
