what's the different use of the different colors of laser pointers

Do you mean the actual original intended use for the diodes?
red and violet were originally from DVD and Bluray drives.
blue was for a video projector.
Green is DPSS, but I don't know its original use. maybe something lab related?

in pointer form some use them as, well pointers. The laser diode they are made from, have uses. Blue red and violet are used as consumer electronics parts, green for bio medical and laser shows and astronomy, very low power is used in the as a pet toy. As far as what field are they employed in, I think researchers use lab lasers not pointers. some use them in the field of thermodynamics as in popping balloons and burning things.

They use all the colors in the entertainment industry also.
Not sure what they use yellow lasers for other than entertainment.

Optogenetics maybe? don't think the low power ones I see for sale are up to the task.

It had to have some use. They where gas before DPSS. So it had to be used for something other than pointing, or projectors.
BTW you can get powers of 100mW+, it will cost you some big $$$ though.

Well yellows were originally planned to replace sodium lasers (astronomy use), however they're far from that... VECSEL diodes & the use of DDD (direct diode doubling) to make 589nm lasers should be made for astronomy exceeding 4W+... from the articles and charts I've read. Not sure if they're valid to replace 20W sodium lasers at that level though

Coherent says their 577nm OPS lasers are used for ophthalmology. A 9W 577nm lasers costs about $20000... lol I hope their prices come down so we can have true yellow pointers

I haven't personally seen a yellow yet, CNI's still building my yellow
They're just a different color that everybody seems to like. Their unique feature is instability sadly...

Its just because they are rare and cost more. People always gravitate to the least accessible objects, this includes men and women too. If reds were hard to make, and expensive, everyone would want one.

Wow, I hadn't really thought of that. Explains why I want a green diode and a 561... It's a shame some of these WL's have no need to be mass produced.

I'm very happy with my 405s and 445s. 405s bring me back to the black light days, and 445 is as close as I am going to get to my favorite color.

I'm guessing you're either a fan of a color more toward 457nm (super expensive) or 435nm (even more expensive)
473's manage to keep me happy, if I were to guess, 480nm would be my favorite color: somewhere between an argon and a 473. Too bad they run for a few thousand $
