I'm wondering if I should turn the pot up a little, the guy said it can do 20mw but he's set it at 5mw to prolong the life of the diode.. :-/

It isn't worth it ! you have a FINE model there and I would keep it how it is. If you get another one, then consider playing with that one. Also, this one is special to you, you wouldn't want to break it
