that pic makes me doubtful, the laser may be embedded in a chip along with the read sensor which would be bad news for us :(

Looks like a chip style diode...?

If it is, that's kinda good because it will keep violet lasers somewhat exclusive. Personally, I don't like having things I like readily availible to the public at large for cheap.

They can have $4 440nm and 650nm, but the rest, I hope they stay exclusive.

Yea that's just it.Things don't look quite as cool when they're dirt cheap and you can easily get tons of them.But blu-ray, and burning lasers are a long way from that IMO.Sure everyone has one around here, but not out there.

Where did u see $4 440nm diodes? I want one! :D

I don't know what to say about the tiny module.It probably uses a crappier(more sensitive) diode, so it's pretty much bad news for us if they're gonna completely stop making them in the 5.6mm cans...

damb that sucks i have to get more blu-ray diodes before they are all gone. will they change this with the ps3 laser asseblies aswell or what. if this is so that would really suck

I don't think that's going to be a big problem actually.There are already a considerable amount of 5.6mm blu-ray cans out there.If they become obsolete for the readers and players they're all gonna be made into pointers by us. :D

Somebody on here mentioned that they were getting really common as direct diodes, and they would start getting really popular soon. They said that they would be the next $4 650 type laser.

I was really just blowing off steam there, sorry.

I would entertain any offers to make a bluray laser module (portable on battery power) with output >65 mW!  I just don't think I have time for DIY!  LOL!   ;D  Glenn
