I'll be using 230 mFd , 330 Volt caps in series.
Charged by a photo flash camera supply using a
LiIon cell, I can get 550 Volts at 115 mFd ---
That's ~ 17 Joules. My new little laser is now in
the USA -- I'm waiting --- In fact, it looks like
both of them are in the US. I wish USPS had better
parcel tracking.
The laser with the "damaged" rod is my first build
from 25 years ago -- It's a big sucker !!

Update on these lasers ----
I ordered two of these little devices over two days. The second one arrived today - I have no idea where the first one is at - Go ask the USPS :-(

Anyway, this is different from the SSY-1 ---

The SSY is the top unit and the new one is the lower. I removed the front piece which I had assumed to be a mechanical shutter but it appears to be an optical switch or maybe the Q switch needing a driver. If it is a Q, it is not a dye cell and is mounted at a 45 degree angle to the beam path. The SSY-1 has a cell between the rod and the rear mirror. This new laser has a trigger coil built into the frame but no trigger circuits to drive it -- no problem...........

I now find out that the black housing is on the rear and is a power sensor. Might be neat to connect to an Oscope.

Interesting, so we would need our own circuit for that q-switch?

A small camera flash has the two resistors and capacitor needed!

Mike, have you ever been able to ionize metal surfaces with the SSY-1?

You know, focus it down onto a metal surface - make a nice spark that "pops" loudly into the air?

As I recall, I was able to punch tiny holes in aluminum foil using a
5" FL glass lens. I don't recall big fireworks. The poor lens wasn't
made for that power and I chipped it on both sides..

Wow, it has an actual aluminum reflector instead of the cheap meet shetal of the SSY-1. There is great
potential in this one.

I'm sure it does as the more pump light that gets reflected into the rod, the more output that rod will be able to produce.

I see. So what does the SSY 1 have instead of the reflective cavity this one has?

I seem to remember seeing it somewhere and it was just a piece of shiny metal wrapped around the tube
and rod. Of course I can't find a picture of it now.

I'm lost here. My SSY-1 appears to have a cavity with a white coating which I think has Barium oxide -- but I can be wrong. I never took it apart. My first YAG which I built has an elliptical cavity which I machined and coated with BaO.
Cavity dimensions and coatings add to efficiency -- I don't understand the several previous posts.
