MI doesn't sell their SSY with a Q-switch, as far as I know. They might have something "in the back", but if they don't I'll be interested in your Q-switch HMike :p also, how much is too much power for the average Q-switch? There has to be some kind of reason why MI removed the Q-switch...

Do you know where to get YAG laser goggles for <$150?

Hwang ---
I'm keeping my Q cell - sorry.
As I recall, a camera strobe unit will drive a
SSY-1 safely -- I can't remember the Joules
but it was around 4Mfd @ 900 Volts IIRC which
is about 1.6 Joules. Need research here.
Those goggles are from 20 years ago and are
labeled YOMAMOYO YL-300. I don't remember the $.
HMike

My volts may be high because my lab flash tube supply
only goes to 500 Volts. There was a PS for them but
the ones I got were trash. Maybe Hurrerscience
will come to remind me !!

MI has the "pulse Forming network" units
36 Mfd - 950 V plus 83 mH inductor.
That's about 15 Joules !!! A bunch !!

They probably removed it for people who want a Q switch without having to buy a whole SSY-1. That
and to make more money. :yabbmad:

The page on the PFN says, "Click HERE for the schematic," but there is no link; though I bet the coil is
just in series with the capacitor.

I've wanted one of these ever since seeing the xenon tubes for sale. I just couldn't think of a
practical use for it to justify the price.

If that were so, I should be able to get them to add the Q-switch back in... we shall see

Yes -- The coil goes between the Capacitor and the tube to limit peak current and control the pulse form to the tube. It also keeps the tube from blowing up!!

I haven't been able to find much on eBay other than random YAG/Erbium rods  why are my searching abilities so terrible :yabbmad:

I'm not sure if you've figured this out yet, but it is very unlikely that you will find the whole laser as a plug n' play like you would with HeNe or argon.

You will likely need to buy them piece by piece. Rod, housing, power supply, q-switch, lamp, etc. You're not going to be popping holes into things 5mins after unwrapping your package.

This is a good one from Israel that has been on my watch list for a while. Sam said it looked like a solid plan. No pun intended.

Oh that's a neat find, although I'm not even sure I'd be able to figure out where everything went :p

He also has more than 10 available... and has a Q-switch. Hmm... I'm still awaiting a reply from MI on their SSY's too...

EDIT: wait, does he mean "a assembled" as unassembled or assembled? Also, is that ignition coil he lists in the parts similar to the PFN1 in SSY-1? Would I still need a trigger transformer assembly for this? Lastly... I would need a charging circuit to charge the caps in the PFN, right?

Damn you Bloom --- I just had to order one -- like
I need it------------ It says new, assembled and
likely aligned. A little smaller than an SSY-1 I think
BUT still needs goggles- PLEASE.
Merry Christmas to ME!!!!
HMike

OOPS -- He says a assembled but disassembled for
pictures. OH well ----
Ignition coils for strobe tubes are quite similar in
connection. Charging circuit, FLASH Caps and trigger
circuit for the coil is up to you. I also recommend a
pulse forming inductor.

Ok so if I bought this listing I would still need a charging circuit, a trigger circuit, and a PFN, anything else? Would the parts from MI work?

Also, any idea how much power this laser can be expected to output on average? It does have a Q-switch, so perhaps 1MW (10ns pulse?)?

Some of the offering indicates only the flash lamp
but the "bidding on" part lists a rod, HR & OC mirrors,
Cavity, Q Sw and Ign coil. Looks complete to me - I hope....
HMike

Hwang --- I don't know what you have or want from MI.
I have a flash tube PS I built long ago plus I have soooo
much stuff to make it work. I need to research a flash tube of that
size to get an idea of the joules it will take. This is where
electronics takes over !!! The PFN can be as simple as 20 turns of
heavy wire around a bolt!!! If you keep the Farads down, you may
not need an inductor. Most camera flash units don't have one.

PS: These can approach 1 MW pulse -- Be Careful. -- Without
goggles, I recommend 2 layers of aluminum foil over your face --- LOL

I won't say I'm an electrician :p I'm hoping all I need to do is solder wires together and be good to go, so I will need to secure the PFN, trigger, and charging circuits (although it seems a charging circuit is quite simple, I may be able to DIY that one).

MI sells a SSY-1 Flash cavity w/o Q-switch for $25, a suitable flashlamp for $40, and the YAG rod for $50, making a kit similar to the eBay listing $115+domestic shipping... we shall see if they have any Q-switches lying around
