Man you're PUSHING that diode.

...I was expecting to get a nice royal blue without the purpleish hue to it... but now... ha, nope. Ugh, better be prepared to shell out some extra $$ to put it in a nice host... I do have another ranger host sitting around--

What do you mean? Yours is still purplish?
 
Mine's still in the mail.

To clarify, I originally expected it to be like a 445 without the purple hue... now I'm expecting another 473'ish color since WBS said his is indistinguishable
 
Ah, OK :P I thought you received an unlucky low diode.

Mine's on the mail as well, and now I regret buying it set to 1.8A. Might have to re-set to 2A or 2.2A before building.


And to add - my Dominator is a royal blue with very little purple and I sort-of-metered-it at ~454nm.

I did driver separately. Gonna do what WBS did of course and push 2.4A :p

Hopefully these don't generate a lot of heat for a decent runtime...

Edit:

After some PM's with WBS, it sounds like the color would be noticeable side-by-side. The diode is a slightly lower WL than 473.

Also he's either on the low end of the power efficiency or he's on the downward slope of the power graph, ~1.7W with a 3 element lens. Also sounds like the duty cycle is the same as any other 445.

There'd be better detail coming straight from him in his review whenever that gets posted, just thought I'd share this while he sits on that 5000th post ;)

Hmmm, I had mine set to 1.8A I wonder how much colour shift that extra .6A gives it???
 
I pushed one of these diodes - very interesting results.

As a word of warning, the 2.9A test displays VERY significant dimming, accompanied by very significant (non-linear from the looks of it) wavelength ramp-up. The move from 2.8A to 2.9A alone brought substantial noticable wavelength shift - just that 100mA increase. It also brought what subjectively looked like a 25% dimming in output. FWIW, the diode pulled back from 2.9A just fine, and is behaving as it was previously, without any indication of damage.

2.9A is intense, but to get over 473nm itself is quite a feat! I don't plan to up my build's current, but this is a great insight into these diodes!

EDIT: Cyp tested mine at various currents also. At 0.2A he found 460nm, at 1A he found 462nm, and at 1.8A he found 466nm. The graph at 2.4A for mine(courtesy of Cyparagon) is right here:

I'm going to spectro all 5, not at 2.9A, but likely at 2.4A or 2.5A

For my current diode, I'm going to set it at 2.75A and enjoy the hue for as long as it lasts.
 
Updated my post with the graph Cyparagon made for me and his findings at other amperages. If anyone has the time, please shoot some rep his way as I can't give him more as of yet.
 
474!! Wowsers! That is incredible.. I would love to know what the output was at 2.9A..

What I would really like to know, is how this behaves past that kink. I'm starting to wish I had pushed harder for a murder fund.

Ie, does it go to 478 at 3.2A, but lose 80% off it's power? Can it sustain that current repeatedly? Etc
 
I'm kind of wishing I would have pushed mine past 2a also. I got scared :)
That's where the output started to slow down climbing in relation to current draw. Maybe it will live a long happy life.

Yes sir. @ 2.0A it is still impressive but it would be nice to break the 470 mark. I reallllly don't want to have to buy another one.
