My girlfriend and I regularly attend music festivals and she loves to play with lasers. I know I'm new and I've done a bit of searching so please excuse me if I ask something that has already been covered. But I know a lot of the red lasers can sometimes look pink, is this just a deal with the camera or are some more pink than others due to a different WL? She really wanted me to find her a pink one. She has the money for just about anything and I'm pretty sure shes buying me a blu-ray build from darkarmyofone tomorrow :). But She really enjoys the pen style with the star cap so she can play with it. Any info on either where to buy a pinkish looking one or what parts I would need to build one would be great. Thanks guys

Alright, after some more searching (searching pink didn't really show anything) but I found that making a portable pink laser would be almost near impossible. But I did find some very cool stationary ones. If anything has changed please let me know

pink isn't really a "color" but a perception of red.

So the closest you could get, from my line of thinking at least... is the magenta seen in the 7 color DIY white laser project found here : http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/custom-7-color-diy-laser-kit-42013.html

I know of at least one member that has done a 7 color build that fits in a plastic case (portable).

cool thanks. I'll look that over. I just sent her a picture of some of the sationary ones I've found and she loves it

You wouldn't have to do a seven color build. You could do a PHR and just about any stout red in Aixiz modules combined in the PHR sled and then placed into a hobby box for a collimated, bright pink laser. I would just make sure that I have easy access to the pots on the drivers for both th PHR and red so that I can get the correct color match for her.

Oh, I'm doing this for my wife too. lol

The easiest way would be PS3 sled.
AFAIK there is a 5.6mm diode in them which contain a Blu-Ray (405nm) and a Red (650nm) die in one housing.

Would it be possible to just hook up two drivers to it and get a good beam out of them?

Yeah, one type of pink would look good with the PHR(violet) and LOC(red) mixed in the appropriate ratio/strength(current). This type using a splitter cube.

The other type of pink would be similar to creating the 7 color project and it would add RGB colors to make white, but with a reduction in the power of the green and blue to allow the red to "tint" the white. At least theoretically. I would have to pass that argument to Jay or Rog.

Because of the different FL of the 405 vs 660, one would always be in focus and one would always be out of focus. I've gathered that there are some fancy optics that could fix this, but I've not been able to figure out exactly what they are.

Commercially available achromatic (or even better, apochromatic) lens systems are for use in visual telescopes or cameras, so they wouldn't be optimal for the 405nm/660nm combo (both of which are near the limits of visibility). It would be possible to design a 2-element achromat exactly for those wavelengths; finding one ready-made is unlikely.

In the PS3, there wouldn't be any need for such a lens. You'd just need enough traveling range for the lens so that both can be focused. The difference should be just a fraction of a millimeter which it needs anyway to compensate for fluttering of the rotating disc.

I just started prototyping pink laser pointers using a new merging system, I'm in the middle of securing a deal with Steve Liu of wicked lasers for the rights to the design. Pink laser pointers no bigger then an ebay laser pointer are very doable actually. Expect pink laser pointers this year.

Lol.. You used 'rights' and 'wicked lasers' in the same sentence.. That's funny. Trusting a chinese company to play nice regarding IP rights. Besides. Magenta isn't hard to do. It's just hard to do in a small space and have it be ROBUST enough for pointer use.

I know I walk a very fine line, I also realize not moving anywhere with an idea get me nowhere ultimately. I have not yet sent off any physical prototypes to wicked lasers or any highly detailed information until the physical NDA that does specifically include biding by intellectual property laws that are of the united states. I will also agree that the pink color is hard to produce robustly in a small package, I went through 3 months of research trial and error and many different optics to pull it off. Until that physically signed paperwork comes in wicked does not get much except some pictures on a fishing pole to get them going in my favor. This is a pair of prototypes, one of them has optical splattering due to glue getting on the front glass of the blu-ray laser, the second is much better done though my camera picks the laser up as being more a pastal pink and not the neonish pick it really is.
