Default Q: For the blue/blu-ray members

Hello,

I have a question for all the members on the forum with a decent power 473nm laser as well as a 803t br laser.

I think that everyone with a blu-ray notices (to a differing extent), the "web artifacts" that seem to occur around the dot of a blu-ray laser when it is at a decent power. It's pretty nice In a way, but on the other hand I would prefer a nice bright dot.

Does anyone with a high powered 473nm notice the same artifacts when projecting a point in the dark? I was at my summer house yesterday for the meteor shower, it is on a mountain with practically no light pollution, great for astronomy, and I noticed that the artifacts were quite pronounced, quite a bit less than the BR, but they were definatelly there. Now the question is, is this a common occurance also with this longer wavelenght, or are just my eyes made in a way that I can see these artifacts at this wavelenght as well?

Thanks
brtaman

Well, artifacts wouldn't have anything to do with the wavelength. Just how the laser is set up.

By the nature of straight diode lasers, they tend to have lots of artifacts. DPSS systems, like blues, don't tend to have that kind of stuff. Unless it is a dirty lens.

Got a dirty lens have you?

My CNI blue with a clean lens is flawless when it's not modhopping. The only 'artifacts' I get are reflections from the brightness of the dot off of the gold endpiece. If I remove that, there is nothing. No exaggeration either; truly, nothing.

My "100mw" CNI (blm-100 from extremelasers) has a large circle of nearly uniform speckles around the dot, not sure whats going on with mine, just got a laserbee meter to try and see what its outputting anyway.

link to the site? I'm curious. If it's one of the Aquarius style lasers, it could be because of the gold end cap. Mine did something similar sounding.

The BLM-100 is a lab style unit
http://www.extremelasers.com/BLM.htm

I think it is a CNI MBL-III-473 (probably less than 100mw though)
http://www.cnilaser.com/blue_laser473.htm

Hemlock mike got one before I did and put together a nice little review for Extreme Lasers, I wonder if he has any similar artifacts when viewing the area around the dot in the dark.

My BLM-100 outputs a clean beam (90 to 110 mW of 473 nM) -- no focus adjustment. I usually shoot it through a Spencer Gifts spyro which doesn't have FS mirrors (yet). It is almost too bright for my Lanling 16RGY projo in my back yard.

The 405's can produce a very small dot. It is harder to focus because everything glows so much. That small dot can be impressive for matches etc and its "lighting effects" are super.

Hey guys,

Just got home. I think that I worded my question a bit wrong. By artifacts I didn't mean bits of light that are not collimated into the beam and scatter around the beam. My lens is perfectly clean btw, thank you . I meant artifacts coming out of the dot when it is shone at a object at around 20-30 feet in complete dark. You know the scatter lines coming out of the dot that are extremely pronounced with a blu-ray laser at higher power. I don't know how to explain it exactly it is kind of like a snow flake, it is a hallucination due to the wavelength of blu-ray laying tricks on our eyes.

What I wanted to know, is if you guys see this "snowflake" effect with your blues when it is completely dark (when there is even a bit of light the dot on my blue is basically just a dot). The reason for me asking is that I was at my summerhouse in the mountains, where there is NO light pollution, and I noticed this effect with my 473 laser, so I was just wondering whether this is happening only to me, or is it a normal at this wavelength.

Thanks
brtaman

Well, when I look at a blue LED, it appears to have a big scatter effect. Along with my 105mA PHR803T, there is lots of scatter. The lasers are playing tricks on our eyes!

i think it's just the fact that the 405nm is close to uv and messes with our eyes (black lights sort of give this effect) and no, 473nm doesn't do it

Hmm, guess it is just my eyes then. Oh well, it doesn't really bother me, I just thought it was a unique feature of blu-ray which I guess it is. But in an absolute pitch dark environment, I can see a bit (5-10% of what the "snowflake" is like with the br) of this distinct hallucination. Thanks for the answers.

My eyes aren't that great and I wear glasses so I always see the 'snowflake'.

When I am focusing the 405 I pretty much have to put on my safety glasses to see the dot clearly.

I think that color blind men (females don't get color blind, right?) start with the blue/violet difference. *I know what your talking about brtaman (and glad your lens is clean * ) because I see the same effect. *For me, depending on my perception, (which might be the hardest thing to explain) I see blue with violet "specks", when looking at the dot of the 473. *I drew a quick 1/2 ass picture... *I sometimes argue a color looks violet when everybody says it is blue. *

I also believe that like red, and unlike green, the power is actually stronger then it appears to our eyes, so our perception gets a little distorted, especially with 405nm. *It becomes hard for our eyes to focus at a distance and looks like the divergence is really bad, but when you go up close, it's just an optical illusion and the dot is perfectly collimated. *

brtaman, have you tried the tennis ball yet? *Or any neon yellow/green material will florescence really well with the 473, and even looks more powerful because the florescence materials convert the light to a spectrum that's more sensitive to our perception. *

Yo, Ace whatsup?

Yeah I did actually bum a tennis ball of a friend , It does flouresce very bright the ball also works great with my BR which is now at 162ma (the br is much brighter, but thats obvious due to the power diff).

Actually I got around to adding my special touch to it. I added arctic silver thermal paste between the diode alu and the crystal to help with heat transfer and quicken warm up (well thats the theory anyways ). I spent like 3 hours aligning the crystals though lol. For some reason I think I made it much brighter. The beam is much more visible now in all conditions, can't wait till I get my lpm to see what it is putting out now. It seems quite a bit brighter, but man was it a hassle to align it again, you get the perfect alignment tighten the screws, turn it back on and its waaay of again.

I'm very happy to hear that!

Did you ever watch the Clone Wars cartoons? Not the new 3D one comming out this fri, but the old school ones? "The jedi is the crystal, the crystal is the heart of the jedi"... As every Jedi builds their own lightsaber personally. As it seems, you and I are able to put our heart into our RPL's and get a little extra out of them. My 225 HAS to me more like 300 now after my 3hr special touch! You would think that they would be optimal from the factory... :

Isn't that the best feeling?

Yeah it is a great feeling, and yeah I was in the US when the oldschool star wars cartoons were on, (cartoon network), I was watching it more than usual due to samurai jack being out at the time. (if we are talking about the same toons). Thats why I like this rpl so much, first off it kinda looks like a lightsaber to begin with, while also having crystals that need to be aligned , but you must concentrate and let the force flow through you, if you want any results :P.

It is great to squeeze every last bit of juice out of the crystals though.

Thanks
