Well, if you dissolved a candy cane in water and pumped it properly, I'm sure you could get it to lase. Most things will lase under the right excitation conditions.
I wonder how many people buy one then return it. That thing really a scam IMO. First of all, they say it is 980nm. You would need really high powers to see the beam if it was possible to see it. Even then, it would most likely be a really deep red. They supply goggles for 532nm. A lot of good that will do for 980. 980nm is also in the IR range yet they claim it is 100% IR free on the product's page.

Well there was that guy that made the antilaser, where it cancels the original wavelength, so essentially. If you could make one on every wavelength it would be white unless you could set it to process and cancel all the light...difficult stuff
