Osram 1.6W PLTB450B 450nm Laser Diode

Here is a test of the new PLTB450B 1.6W 450nm diode from Osram. This diode in comparison to the M140 diode offers a better beam divergence and gets pretty close in power about 300mW on average less efficient based on the results of the diodes I have tested. Tested 5 of these so far and they all seem to average about 2W @ 1.8A with a G-2 where the M140 averages around 2.3W @ 1.8A. There is one drawback there is more dye reflection/splash than the M140 with a single element lens. Also this diode has three bond wires compared to the four bond wires found on the M140.

This is the second revision of this diode and like it's 1.4W predecessor and as noted above it still only has three bond wires but this version has added an esd protection circuit.

Huh, I was told during a GB for these diodes that they are MORE efficient than M140s

That's pretty much why I bought it :(

Yea I have not seen any freaks but I am sure they exist. Although all the ones I have tested did a bit better than the one Polishedball tested.

Diode number 2 results. Much more like I would have expected.

Bias is at 172ma doing 30mw
500mw. @ 520ma
750mw. @. 728ma
1w. @. 945ma
1.2w. @. 1.13A
1.34w. @. 1.28A
1.55w. @. 1.428A
1.73w. @. 1.62A
1.83w. @. 1.75A
1.9w. @. 1.94A
1.93w. @. 2.2A. Clearly not worth pushing harder in my case. If I had 2 doing this I'd kill one but want to keep one working.

The first diode may have been a result of lens reflections not sure I tried a very small 2 FL lens that works great on P73's could have done some damage before I switched to the g2

Hope this is useful.

The real key to this diodes is the lower divergence. It is probably half that of the M140 so in terms of power density this thing is looking like a stud.

I havent been on the forum for several months... I come back to green diodes and this beauty :drool: ...wishing I had more funds for the hobby :undecided:

It looks like the diode mhemling got was the rare freak. It did almost 2.5W @ 1.8A. I am very sorry to get
everyone's hopes up. :yabbem:

would it be too much trouble to ask for a dot comparison with an M140? like you have with the 3.5W and old gen 9mm 445nm diodes, as well as the higher wavelength blue 9mms.

since you say there is more artifact with this using a single element than a m140, a 3 element dot comparison may be useful too, for those just interested in a high powered but relatively low divergence/artifact 445nm. the g lens comparison will demonstrate exactly how much artifact we're talkin here.
