That laser was tuned to 589nm, the sodium D line. I remember reading about it like a year ago, but I don't feel like digging it up right now. It was used for some sort of atmospheric testing or something.

A dye laser used at the Starfire Optical Range for LIDAR and laser guide star experiments is tuned to the sodium D line and used to excite sodium atoms in the upper atmosphere

Thats one friggin strong beam, just how wide it is and its still that visible!!! :-[
If only they made that in a Leadlight ;D

It's from side on as well, imagine it from the front or back ends :eek:

First off, the beam is pulsed so you get very high peak powers, second, that picture is very long exposure at night. Look at the moving stars in the sky.

I thought it was maybe just stars that were visible during the day ;D

That's a good point, it must have taken a VERY long time considering how far the stars have moved. :eek:
