Non-AR Coated Lenses???

Hey there guys. So is there any word on the street (or laser community streets) about decently priced non-AR coated lenses for 405nm diodes? The AR reduces output of wavelengths not specific to its use correct? [noobie here].

And on a side note. Im putting together a blu-ray 405nm rig right now. I have a ps3 diode, and an xbox 360 external hd-dvd diode (from the older PHR-803T tray), im very new at this and was just wondering which i should go forth with in my project. Things like expected mW output, life duration, and most importantly, special lenses that wont reduce output were on my mind.

let my laser knowledge grow please!!!

I have been trying to find a source of good coated (for 405nm) lenses too, with little or no success, though. All i run across are lenses coated for red. The only option thus far is to use clear acrylic or glass lens. I got some here: http://www.roithner-laser.com/Optics-LD.htm It seems unlikely that 405nm collimating lenses will be available commercially in the near future.
There might be a coated plano-convex lens in the pickup itself, but its specs (normally very long focal length) render it almost useless as collimator. wannaburn, though, has succeeded in getting one to work in his 6x blu-ray burner design

Thanks Phenol. Yah, probably such a small demand for such products that we'll never be seeing them.

if you are willing to spend about $120, you can get a mounting tube and 400-600nm AR coated lens from thorlabs.com.

wow. thats up there. you think we could get a reduction in price if we buy in big numbers? anyone else looking for AR coating for 400nm-600nm???

we probably could get a discount, but it would probably have to be upwards of 10 units and i cant imagine them lowering their prices by much. You may also try calling Meredith Instruments to see if they can do a short wavelength coating. they are similar quality to thorlabs but much cheaper.

As per your other question... the PS3 diode should be run at about 38mA for somewhere between 8-20mW output. The PHR-803T diode however is in high demand lately- it can be driven at 80mA and higher and has been seen to achieve 100mW. I gusee it depends on how powerful a blu-ray pointer you want.

great. thanks glaserfan. i think im going to start the project with the ps3 diode so if i mess something up i dont destroy the better of the two diodes. then once i actually get it working i'll switch in the hd-dvd diode.

the axiz modules on dealextreme are not AR coated, so they work better for 405nm vs the coated glass lenses

Sorry to interrupt but what is an AR Coated lens? And what makes it more special than a standard lens?

AR stands for anti reflective, a special coating to the lenses allows more light to pass through the lens versus being reflected off the surface

Non Ar coated lenses would reflect more light. there is a sticky that will lead you to lenses. It can be found in the sub-forum Companies

What bout an IR filter?

Huh?!? What are you talking about? Are you looking for an IR filter coated for blue DPSS lasers or what?

Good to know.. I ordered several from there...

But i also found a non coated lens in at least one module ordered from AixiZ directly.
