Default New 808nm build.

Hey all,
Got a few questions on my first build...

I have ordered the diodes and it looks like this - the clipers on the diodes, is that mean the red one is + and black is - or ground?

This is a 1W 808nm TO-5 diode

here is the driver - Has anyone used this before?
eBay Link to order

housing - I have emailed the dude, and seems like although the lens is not listed but it is compatible with 808nm wavelength, but he did point it out that is made out of Acrylic which from my understanding it's max cooling? ability is only up to 500nm, anyone got any ideas? or what's the heat out put on the diode at max out put?

eBay Link to order

Default Re: New 808nm build.

Welcome to the forum! Please read the safety stickies and rules. Also, just to clarify, that diode is running at 808nm. That's below the average humans color detection range, so if you see anything, it Will be a deep faint re, but it will still be pumping out 100s of milliwatts. As for those diodes, personally I stayed clear, the seller didn't seem to have proper descriptions about how to run those diodes. And because of the picture where he's just burning up stuff right onto the diode can. As for the acrylic...I would suggest getting a coated glass lens. The diodes I saw where pumping around 500 mW which will burn the acrylic up on a long duty cycle.

Thanks bud, so the diode does gets pretty hot?

the diode is rated at 1W but you are saying i can be able to pump extra 100+ out of it?

but yeah i think 808 can only be seen with though a digi camera (i may be think something else)

Default Re: New 808nm build.

I think it is a very bad idea to build a high-power 808nm as first build.
Better use a LPC-815/826 660nm red diode as first build. The dot and beam is much more visible than the 808nm diode. Don't cut on the cost, your eyes are priceless.

Do you have safety goggles?

That invisible beam will kill your eyes just as fast as a 1W beam of any color. IE in about .25 seconds.

I also have a 532nm diode too, i can try build that first :3
The only prob with that is I can't remember what wattage that diode is anymore

I also have a few diodes from DVD-RW as well as 1 from BD-ROM

532 is a 808nm diode that shines through crystals to create 532.

I see, I had no idea ..

So, would those diodes from DVD-RW work at all?
or should I still order one and go from there.

I been trying to take this one laser pointer a part, i already got to the body and everything but just can't seem to get the housing off. I am not sure if it's a screw on or clipped in

It takes 2 AAA batteries

I was also wondering what kind of power source should I use on the 1W diode?
since the driver i have ordered is recommended 18650.

Default Re: New 808nm build.

IF this is your first build, I think you should forget about the 1W 808 nm diode.
First of all it is very dangerous, and secondly you will be very disappointed with
what you can actually see. As Blord said just go with a common red diode, the
build will be cheap and much safer than the 808 nm, however I would still
suggest the use of appropriate eye protection for anything over 5 mW. Clif at
Cajunlasers has been may favorite supplier of laser parts recently due to
the selection, price, and fast shipping. He has everything you need to build a red
laser.
Here's a check list:
-Diode
-Module
-Silicon Wire (trust me)
-Driver (preselected current is easiest, stay below 500 mA for the lpc-826)
-Host
-Batteries appropriate for the host (linear drivers will require 2x 3.7v li-ions)
-lens
-focusing ring/adapter
-switch (IF it is not built into the host, pen hosts for example)

Good Luck!

Default Re: New 808nm build.

Thank you so much for the list and advice.

This IS my first build, but I have been playing with lasers for a little while now (6 years or so) I have always paid for the finished product. The highest one i have had was 300mw 532nm green laser.

It's just this is the first time I wanted to build my own that's higher power as well as custom build for my need.

I am not building it for the look of the laser, I know you CAN'T see anything at all with it

But I will be starting with 660nm and something that's alot lower powered

(is 808nm more dangerous than other ones with all else equal...)
or is it just because you can't see it and it may poke something

would 18650 batteries work?

Default Re: New 808nm build.

y0

Its danger is derived from the low cost of a 808nm diode and the fact it is invisible/barley visible to the eye, which means you cannot tell where its pointing and/or reflecting to.

The thing i don't get is why people want to build them, fair enough if your using them under night vision optics or for DPSS applications, but for burning its just crap, they also have a very bad divergence.

So yup start with a 660nm diode.

18650 batteries will work with that driver.

Hey guys, just a very quick update.
I did some search, and turned out that "special" diode is a 980nm unknown power diode with a titanium casing on it.

Since this is my very first DIY for laser most of you guys wanted me to try it out on something else first.
So i found a older laser i had when i was in high school. took it a part and here is what i got so far...
and i can't seem to get the head off.
just wondering if i am doing anything wrong?
