Need Advice For 5W C Mount

After building a decent amount of visible laser pointers, I want to build an IR laser using this: 5W 808nm C Mount Laser Diode CW Semiconductor Diode TO3 SEALED w H Fac Lens | eBay . Are there any combiners that can collimate separate c mount or to3 packages into a single beam? My goal is for the beam to be able to melt soldering paste. I have seen other posts that used visible lasers for soldering, but none with infrared.

Thanks for sharing. I never seen the FAP800 modules before. Have you ever bought from directly from Coherent because I cant find any prices on their site?

I would never order directly from Coherent as a hobbyist, I've been able to find their products used on ebay with success, only bought one FAP800 with a dark fiber on it so far and have found several of them on ebay. I just bought a 25 watt output FAP600 on ebay for 150 dollars a few days ago and from an ex employee of that company which was "new" old stock, so no run time and at a fraction of the cost of new.

Il stick with ebay then. I should be able to find one with a lens or collimator of some kind.

Best thing with eBay is that should something go wrong they'll have your back. Every purchase is backed with their delivery guarantee which I've had to resort to in the past with a chinese seller that never shipped. If the seller refuses a refund eBay will give you your money and then deal with the seller themselves, great customer service from them :yh:

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. In diachi's link, there is a video of a combined 6w laser melting soldering paste. I wonder what the condition of the lenses are like after the vapors coming into contact with the lenses.

5 watts is a lot for warming or melting paste, maybe too much.

I am going to use virtual goggles with unfiltered CCD cams so I can see the beam in action and focus it live, also you can have a 2nd cam at your target and switch back and forth, adding a micro SD card to record to should be included or easily added via the AV jack.

I will be very careful with near IR, one slip up could mean a severe lifelong injury.

If I do start working with 5W IR lasers, I was planning on getting eagle pair goggles and a sort of mask around it so my eyes would be sealed from the sides and top. Virtual goggles with a ccd camera like red cowboy mentioned sounds like a good idea.

A 5 watt IR diode will probably vaporize the material, if focused into a tiny point upon it. Might want to expand your beam some to lower the power density to keep that from happening. A 10mm diameter spot from a 5 watt laser beam will be hot, a .25mm focused spot 40 times the power density, poof!
