Cool My new Golden Beam Star Pointer (Pic Heavy).

I recently bought this beautiful Golden CNI 589nm 80mW PGL-III-C from Eforce (Aust dealer) and it just blows me away every time I use it.
Such a gorgeous colour and so very well made.
The unit arrived within two weeks, well packed and Eforce was always in contact with me letting me know of it's progress.

The unit is very solid and is packed with safety features (which is a pain at times) but good to have anyway.
It has a key switch and a kill switch (dongle) that has to be in place for the laser to operate once you press the side button with a five second delay before turning on.

The front has an aperture shutter too which keeps the dust off the lens when stored away.

This is actually a very nice colour to use for astronomy star pointing and even though it's 80mW it's not overpowering at night pointing up in the sky so your night vision is not impaired.

Well here's some pics of the unit.
I keep it in a nice solid 'Pelican' type case which keeps it dry and dust free.

Here's the LPM readout of the unit below:

And I even tried to light the gas stove top with it too, (but it was already lit.)

And finally some outdoor shots showing how it performs as a star pointer.

Well that's it for now, hope you enjoy.
Thanks for looking.

RB.

Nice!

That picture of the unit lying down showing the beam made it look like 577nm on my phone

Congrats. Glad you call it golden as I don't see it as yellow either. Yellow is plain in comparison.

That's a beauty RB, welcome to the 589nm club!
I'ts nice to see that you can still get CNI handhelds in Australia. I wonder how Eforce gets them by your customs?
Those PGL-III-C hosts are IMO very nice also; they look and feel much better in person than they do in pics.
You can't ever get too much of that golden goodness!

Nice. I'll agree with how it looks golden at night. My dragon lasers 589nm has actually become my favorite star pointing laser. The sparkling beam of gold is appealing to the eyes without being overpowering.

That's pretty awesome how you focused 500 589nm lasers to one point Lux lol
Doesn't seem right that you have 2 Bow and both are stroger than mine. I max out at 82mW but at least it's very visible. I think it is very easy to see the difference in slight wavelength changes around the 589 mark. Would love to have the same output in a 594nm but I don't see that happening. A true golden or burnt orange would look pretty cool.
Does anyone ever notice that sometimes it looks quite golden orange or is it just mine? Last summer when I took a few units on vacation I shined mine across a lake and 1/2 the people thought it looked more golden orange than golden. I noticed that it is very dependant upon the background and lighting conditions.
I have a red/green mix module from O-like and when the alignment is really good it doesn't look as golden and more yellow than the real thing. At least it's interesting as it can look different depending upon which angle you look at the mixed beam from. I haven't turned on either my 589 or the mixed module in a long time. Need to take another look at them.

I have noticed that after it starts getting nice and warm after lasing for 2 minutes or so the beam does start getting more golden orange. The initial cold power up for me is the yellowest it looks then it settles in about 30 seconds in and gets near peak and then it has that brilliant golden yellow look. Then when it starts getting warm to the touch I notice in complete darkness as I was taking my photos that it started to get more orange. It is definitely a very dynamic system. The beam quality is phenomenal though, mine does not focus since I have a Spartan but it will start cutting electrical tape after about 10 seconds or so when it is warmed up at about 8 inches from the aperture. I even had it smoking a red match so it's beam profile is really nice. I love it!

Default Re: My new Golden Beam Star Pointer (Pic Heavy).

Mine doesn't focus either as I also have a Spartan. Honestly doesn't bother me at all though because the divergence is so good. I really prefer everything I own to be able to focus but that's the one exception.
Maybe its shifting as some others do as they heat up. I'll have to look up the duty cycle before running it for awhile as it would be awful if it blew on me.

Hmmm, it says 1 minute so be careful.

I don't let it run at a constant 2+ minutes, I give it about 30-40 seconds on then 30 seconds off before I switch it back on again. I have seen mine tested at 5 mins constant on in the test video from Gr3en and I have seen another ran consistently at much higher duty cycles than what I give it and it has been reported that the host handles the heat very well. When I was saying 2+ minutes I mean with a duty cycle in there. But it takes about that much time of on/off cycles to get to its happy temperature. But after running with my stated duty cycle for 3+ minutes I have noticed it get more golden as I was photographing it. I then turn it off for a few minutes and back on again and with the temperature cooled seems to go back to its golden yellow until it warms up more and goes more golden orange again. It is pretty dynamic but consistently so.

My Spartan in the video from Gr3en shows this a bit, not nearly as good as if it were in the dark however:

Default Re: My new Golden Beam Star Pointer (Pic Heavy).

Usually I'll run my spartan in 1-3 minute intervals and give it a few minutes to cool between uses. I think the one minute stated duty cycle might be a little overly cautious, but I'm not about to leave mine on for 5+minutes just to see what happens. It actually seems to work better when warmed up. The output will be a little lacking for the first 20 or so seconds on a dead-cold start. At max power it will slowly melt into black plastic and pop a black balloon.

In this review cyparagon talks about the duty cycles of the spartan and some other interesting facts about the driver/power input.

Congratulations, RB astro. That is a wavelength I would dearly like to have as well. I'll rep you as soon as it lets me. Thank you for the great beam shots.
