is my IR diode dead???

Hi guys,

I'm looking for someone with experience with IR diodes to have a look at the pictures that I've uploaded to my other thread below:

I figure that this is a better forum to post the question as this requires someone with IR experience. Due to the fact that IR is invisible to the naked eye, I can't tell if it's lasing correctly of if the diode is dead (LED). Hence I've uploaded pictures taken from my iPhone 4.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance here.

Those pics are useless..
You can't look into the Laser's beam to get
any useful data other than...
1) it is ON
2) it is OFF

Shine the laser's output onto a flat surface so that
the Beam Profile can be seen.

Thanks Jerry,

I've attached 2 pictures of the beam shot. It doesn't look right, parallel lines with gaps in-between. Having said that, this is straight out of the diode w/o passing through any lens.

What do you think?

This is a free 100mW IR diode. 9mm package.

That looks like a multi-line laser without a collimating
lens and some of the lines have been damaged.

BTW... shining a laser at 90 degrees to a flat surface
will show a beam profile without all the distortion.

I've taken out the primary 1000mW - 1500mW diode for a brief test. Here are some beamshots directly from the diode without any lens/module.

Is this diode OK??

Again refer to post #4 about shining a laser
on a Flat (UniColored) surface at 90 degrees
from the beam direction at aperture.

I still can't see the beam profile clearly.
All I can say is that you have IR radiation.

The clearest Beam profile pic to date is the
1st one in Post #3.

You're gonna kill it if you run it outside of a module. I've already told you this in your other thread.

Cyparagon: I'm not ignoring anyone's advice, what I'm doing now is I'm only keeping it on for 0.5seconds at a time, just enough to hit the shutter button on my phone. I then wait a while and make sure the diode is back to room temp before taking a second shot. I doubt pressing it into a module would make a difference with this method because the diode doesn't get hot anyway.

I also want to make sure the diode is OK before pressing it into the module so it's a catch 22 situation.

Jerry: I've managed to take a 'good' picture. Here it is attached.

It would help a lot if you aimed the Laser at a
single color wall (like White or Beige).
That spotchy irregular colored couch material is
not doing it for me...:undecided:

BTW.. you'll be fine without an Aixiz module if
you keep the diode on time at 500ms then let
it cool down before giving it another shot.

That's like saying you want to find out if a light bulb works before putting it in a light socket.

Yes unfortunately I haven't got the right tools to press a diode out of the module so I need to make sure it works before pressing it in.

It's infinitely more difficult to remove with your bare
hands a Laser Diode pressed into an Aixiz Module than
it is to unscrew a light bulb from it's socket with your
bare hands....

So maybe you're asking the wrong questions here. Maybe you should be asking how to remove a diode with household tools. Because there are ways of doing it.
