My First Blue Build (well first any build)

Hi All,
I'm posting my first build (or putting together pieces I bought anyway).

I purchased the following:

1.7W (2W M462 462nm) in Copper Laser Module W/1.8A X-Drive & Three Element Glass Lens From DTR

S4 Host with battery extension tube (using 2 x Panasonic 18650) and extended copper heat sink from Survival Laser. And then a drilled pill and battery contact board when I realised I needed them.

First off I got the diode and host and couldn't figure out how the hell to get it together and realised I needed a battery contact board and a drilled pill. I had tried to copy off someone else's posted build and didn't realise about needing the drilled pill and battery contact board. Anyway, I eventually got the required parts and put it all together.

I mangled the brass ring a bit but it all worked :)

It measured 1.8W with the three element lens and 2.15W with a G2 lens. I can't post the power pics because I have since ruined the LaserBee II thermopile - first I burned it with too tight a focus with this laser and then my wife thought it would be a good idea to wipe it clean and removed the black stuff off the sensor area :yabbem: It's recently been sent back for repairs.

Thanks to DTR for answering my stupid questions very quickly and patiently.

The laser is amazing. The power took a little bit of getting used to. I have some Eagle Safety Glasses that also do IR so I didn't realise how bright it was and burned a couple of holes in the paint on my bedroom roof and then set fire to a role of paper towels across the room.:shhh: The wife wasn't too impressed :) Maybe the LaserBee wasn't an accident:):)

As this is my first bunch of pics happy to be told if I have missed anything or included unnecessary stuff. I realise the pics will probably be quite boring to experiences forum members ( but exciting for me).

Got my NDG7475 1W 520nm today so that will ne next.

Nice laser, I did same laser as my first build but with blue ano heatsink and extended blue focusing ring :)

This is embarrassing to admit bit it's now broken. I just can't leave well enough alone. Thought I would trim the wires between driver and battery board a bit better. When I was taking it apart I forgot about holding the heat sink to avoid it spinning and twisted one of the pins off the diode. I had a stab at putting a dab of solder to re attach the pin but no go.

So got a LPM and ruined it and managed to destroy my first build. :(:drunk:

Anyway, got another blue diode on the way and the LPM has been sent for repair. I won't make the same mistakes again:D

The blue was great fun while it worked

Sorry for your loss, as long as you see it as a learning then that is fine! some of the best builders here make the odd mistake and some wouldnt be where they are now without learning from there mistakes, its good to Share too so others are reminded and warned of what can happen,
The 462nm is going to be my next build!
I see it in pictures but I NEED to see the blue in person and put it next to one of my 445nm
Keep Up the Good Work!

On image number 4, it almost looks like the beam is bent but it's just an illusion with the ground....Unless, the laws of physics are changing!

Yeh, I should have explained that one. It's bouncing off water :)

No not that image. The 4th image you posted.

edit: although the bouncing is cool!

miniature black hole! yeah!

Looking more carefully I can see it is straight.

A learning experience is exactly how I look at it. Appreciate the encouragement. :thanks:

Good job on your first assembly/build. I'm sorry its broke but you sound like your having fun regardless. I enjoyed your report it made me chuckle. Im not sure about yours but my wife truly thinks I have lost my mind. But she is very supportive because she likes seeing me like a little kid again each night for laser time. I'm new to this world as well. I just got my first real laser last week and have a few more coming from Sci-fi. I also ordered 2 hosts from deal Xtreme to hopefully build my own soon. Anyways, welcome and congrats!

Thanks for the encouragement. My wife is encouraging as well - nothing is safe when she gets the urge to clean :san: Over the past few days she has actually been pestering me to bring a laser for her on our evening walk around the golf course.

The blue laser now lives again too - got my replacement diode from DTR a couple of days ago.

I think the saying is that "you end up throwing the first pancake into the garbage anyway"?

I'm the first born, so, maybe I hear that a lot?

:D

Anyway - You are learning a lot in this process, and taking the problems in stride.

:gj:
