Default My Blue Rainbow, 405/445/473/488

As my 473nm DOHM 100mw DPSS laser arrived the other day i thought I would do a comparison between my "blues".

Funny how the eyes work- my 488nm Argon had always looked pale "Sky Blue" turquoise to my eyes. When I put it next to the 473nm it looked very almost green rather than turquoise!

Here is the 473 next to the 488.

Here are the pattern comparisons. VERY hard to do this without classes as the camera over exposes. I shut the aperture down all the way and sped the shutter right up. In the end i used my glasses over the lens.

Note the 473 is no way near TEM-0. I suspect the optics or the crystal have been knocked out of alignment slightly. I am interested in talking to anyone with suggestions before I attempt it on my own. I understand the crystal alignment is very hard to do?

WITH glasses

Here are all of my "Blue's" I have right now.
Left to right:
405nm PHR-803 diode in Ultrafire C3 host,
445nm A140 1.5W in Ultrafire W501B Host
473nm DPSS DOHM 100mw Labby
488nm single line Uniphase Argon laser

When you look at the beams the camera gets wiped out by the brightness of the high power 445, so much so that you can't even see the poor 405nm on the left hand end. The red LED on the PSU is brighter!

Here are the beam patterns!
First without filtering (my poor CCD!)
L to R:
488nm Argon, 445nm 1.5W, 473nm Labby, and the poor spot to the right and up is the 405nm PHR.

Now with filtering!
L to R:
488nm Argon, 473nm Labby, 445nm 1.5W (you can clearly see the elongated multimode diode beam) and the tiny spot to the right and up is the 405nm PHR.

Hehe dayam, looks like you'd be supplying most of the miniLEM

And I know what you mean about the argon, my ML argon actually looks more green than blue to me. It's quite an epic colour.

I'd probably leave the DHOM as it is. Running in non-TEM00 is pretty common in higher powered lasers, best to play safe.

Last 3 "blues" you need are: 457nm DPSS, 435nm DPSS, a ML argon now

As for the 473 DPSS; mine averages 230mW and its beam stays as clean as my argon's

Well, almost. I should clean the lens.

Yes I so want a multi line argon now. 435nm would be an interesting dark blue, I'd like to see one of them! I'm thinking about a 450nm Osram diode, I'll probably get one soon.
Hmm, 457nm, I'll have a think about that one!

they don't come by cheap; there is a multi-watt one on feebay for <$10,000 last I checked.

edit: I'll try to find the cheapest source on a 435nm.. though it's probably CNI.

Yeah, I have a ML box head and a Uniphase PSU I bodged onto it. The head is really close to EOL with over 6100 hours on it though, the capillaries are full of junk and it's a pain to start ... But it works - well, it did when I last fired it up over a year ago. Not long to go though

Sorry to see that the mode is not TEM 00. I was disappointed to see that it wasn't a perfect dot when I got it. I can assure you though, that the mode was REALLY worse when I had it. It was never a sold dot. They swift modes really often and shipping might have caused it to change once more. The only dpss i have ever owned that is TEM00 is from laserglow, a unit that was used in the making of movie Tron Legacy, and that might as well swift modes sometime.
DW about it, messing with the optics is a tricky task which I haven't tried myself.
The TEM could me really worse. IMO you are lucky.

Its OK Silvershot, I'm not disappointed it's still an awesome beam!

It may have shifted a bit in shipping, who knows. I might give the optics a good clean and see what it looks like then

Its my first DPSS other than a couple of 30nW green pointers. It definitely has some power, if i put a lens in front of the head and focus it to a point it can burn dark objects. My daughter thinks its beautiful too!.

Since I likely won't be able to take any new pics I went through my archive and found a bunch of pics featuring my various blues. Most of these I've posted elsewhere here.

An overexposed shot of my 1W 445 (that recently died ) with Jupiter to the right.

The longest 5 second exposure I've ever taken. I knew that the lens flare couldn't hurt the sensor but it still made me cringe with a less than 3 month old camera.

87mw PHR-803T 405nm in a hotlights host. Even being relatively low powered it's still one of my favorite lasers. It has a really deep violet that is a royal PITA to photograph properly.

473nm labby with a few other lasers around it.

Argon time!

The main beam dominated by the 488 line.

The lines it produces at idle. (4A) The blues are more pronounced since the green lines have a low gain at lower powers.

Full power. (10A)

Some fun shots using one or more of the above lasers:

Crap. Crossed the beams!

The lines produced around 4-5A. The main beam is to the left of the faint violet line.

My makeshift rig for projecting though a piece of lumia glass. ML Argon @ 8A.

ML Argon and 473 through another piece of lumia glass.

ML Argon, 473 labby, and (I think) PHR-803T 405. (if not it was my 6x 210)

And finally ML Argon, 710mw 445, 473 labby

All the pics I posted were taken with my Nikon D90 DSLR. Honestly you don't need to drop a pile of cash on a DSLR to get good results. A tripod to keep it steady and using the self timer to allow any shake from pressing the shutter button help a lot. I got a pocketable Sony WX9 P&S for Christmas last year for times when I don't want to lug the D90 around and it takes shots that frequently rival my DLSRs. I'll have to try and post some samples from it sometime soon.
