I switched my Glass axis lens for a Meridith lens I purchased from LarryDFW a couple of months ago and I picked up mucho burn abilities.

Again heres the specs 808nm 2W C-mount diode with Meridith Lens assembly running at 2800ma's

It took about 3minutes to burn through this piece of pine wood so this video has been slightly abbreviated

How long did it actually take to burn through...??

Just a suggestion.... Since you are using a 2 Watt 808nm Laser
and I know you will be soon burning stuff with a 5watt Laser...

I would use a Flat Black non ignitable material or even a Flat Black
painted firebrick or a Black Satin Anodized aluminum Sheet as a Laser
beam stop placed at a slight angle directed away from you...

Other than that... your burning Videos a great....:cool:

it takes 3 minutes,also try to make popcorn with it!i saw on mythbusters they were making popcorn with lasers!

Good work on your 2 watt 808nm IR burner.

I'm glad the lens worked for your application.

Just one small correction; it wasn't a Meridith lens.

I think, from the photo, it was the Hi-Power lens assembly.

I now have some broadband AR coated Hi-Power assemblies that would work even better.

Could you tell me for sure what kind of lens this is. When I purchased from you, you said they were no longer going to make this kind and that you only had a few left.

All I know is that its produces the strongest tightest red beam Ive every seen!

It is the same short focal length lens, that I use in the current Hi-power lens assemblies.

The short FL gives it the tightly collimated beam on your Red diodes.

The AR coating is optimized for BR & Green (OK for Red).

The only improvement possible for your 808nm is a broader-band AR coating.

It would cut the reflection losses a few more percent.

Yep Im looking forward to them. No more cylinder lens. Thanks for recommending them to me. I'm still holding up on mounting the 5w 808. Just playing around making sure I do not have any spurious current surges or noise spike that might destroy it.

I worry about that big wire wrapped resistor generating a voltage and current spike acting an inductor when I switch on and off.

We are all looking forward to your linear incinerator. You could probably put an X-Y stage at the focal point and cut some circuit boards. With the appropriate shroud of course. I think if an IR beam hits copper it reflects a good portion of the power.
 
The wire wound resistor can be wired anti parallel with a scottky diode (an old computer power supply has several of these) to free wheel the spikes, but at the currents used and the C in te circuit you will not have an issue with that. If you plan to modulate with say a MOSFET go ahead and add the diode.

What parameters ? ..... i mean, ohm, diameter, turns and wre thickness ? ..... also approximatively.

Heheh ..... mirrors in IR CNC cutting machines are made with copper :whistle:

(ok, ok, POLISHED copper :p)
