just got my 1w blue laser from O-like today after waiting a month.. and it will not focus! at about 50 yards it is about the size of a softball. which imo awful. i dont know what to do, i tried cleaning the lenses and nothing. i can get it pretty small on the wall, buyt there is also a stray starburst off to the left.

Get used to it because without a bunch of expensive and clumsy corrective
optics, that's about the best you'll get from this diode.
That's just how they roll....
The 3rd link in my signature shows you how one of these diodes shine without a lens.
Maybe that will give you a clue about why these are so hard to focus into a dot at a distance.

anselm is right, that's just how it is. It's called divergence, more or less the laser's ability to keep a tight beam over distance. Green is one of the best, blue (445nm) is one of the worst. I was even a little let down when I got my first 445 knowing the beam specs.

You will find it more disappointing that the laser won't burn matches at 3 meters. My 1.2 W 445 with 445 glass lens can light matches up to 2 meters. Its really disappointing indeed, but you can't beat the price of these diodes for what they provide.

http://laserpointerforums.com/f65/there-something-wrong-my-beam-spot-59400.html

The spots in that thread are at about 30 feet. The beam will continue to get larger the farther away it gets. At 150 feet (50 yards) it is going to be pretty large ;)

As you can tell from the pictures, the higher output (higher quality) lens gives an even worse "spot" because the output from the diode is wide, flat, and multi-parted.

Peace,
dave
