hey, i just found some CD drives. They were no burners just ordinary Drives. I know the diodes sitting in there are veeery weak. But i just wanted to make a tut how to make a laser just out of a CD Drive and nothing else.
Its flat and has no metal casing. The Semiconductor just lays in air. It looks some way like a SMT LD or something like this. The three Pins are on the same Level! There is no difference between them in height. I cant take a picture because my macros look like shit.
Does anybody know this type of LD?
I checked the Pins with a Multimeter Diode Tester, but im not sure there is no current flowing just when i hook it up one way. Do i have to take those pins?

PS:
Sry for my bad english^^

I'd have to say it's not worth it...

What is the point of making a low powered laser you cannot see?

Also, these "flat, SMT" diodes can't be pressed into regular modules with focusing optics, so you're going to have a hard time putting a lens in front of it to culminate it.

Anyways, to answer your question, if your multimeter's diode tester works when + and - are hooked up one way but not the other, then you've probably found the correct pins. To check this, use a cheap digital camera, like the ones in cell phones, and take a picture of you testing the diode with the multimeter. If everything works, you should see light coming out the diode in the photo.

PS: Your English isn't that bad, though try not to use foul language... If you were to put capital letters at the beginning of sentences and not start incomplete sentences with "but", you'd have more or less perfect grammar.

okay,
I know i cant see the IR spectrum ;D Thats why i did build myself a only IR camera. This is pretty cool , everything looks very different.
Now for my question
I found another player - This time its a DVD ROM. What i found inside was a diode with 4 (!) Pins. I think it is IR diode (CD) red diode (DVD) and phototransistor or thermometer or whatever it is in one. Do you have any informations about diodes from dvd readers? How strong can they be?
