Hello! So Im interested in the 589-594 nm range lasers. My favorite color is orange and I love the golden yellow/orange shades of color. I was interested in building a 589 (preferably) or 594 nm laser but I cant really seem to find much info on them. I want to make one that has the most visible beam, which I think would be 589nm and that's a + as I like the color much more then 594. Any info would be nice, such as what are 589nm lasers normally used for, how is the color made, whats the most powerful one out there (diode) things of that nature. I want it to be a portable handheld. Any points in the right direction would be great! Thanks very much guys and gals! ~Adam

Both 589nm and 593.5nm are DPSS, so they use IR diodes and pump crystals to convert the light. I don't know the crystal process off the top of my head like 532nm or 473nm, but the info is there on the forums :)

593.5nm is cheaper at the lower powers, but most 593.5nm lasers are unstable and are hard to get more than a few milliwatts out of.
589nm lasers are more stable, and cost more but you can easily get 80mW from them.

Your best bets are to check out CNI, LaserGlow or buy one used.

The various methods to reach that spectrum is summarized here: Article on yellow and orange lasers - Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology

Sum frequency generation would be the common DPSS method you often see on this end of the budget pond. I think Mario Master repaired/re-aligned a 594nm unit a couple years ago. Perhaps he will chime in with his personal experience in how working with DPSS systems is a non-trivial task.

Thank you both for your input on my quest to a mind boggling-ly beautiful laser!!! To bad my sig refuses to work because id love to show off what grasped my interest in lasers and specifically, 589nm lasers! I think what im looking for from what ive gathered is a 589nm laser. I saw someone on here ordered a 100mw one and it turned out to be more like 150-200+ mw and damnnnnnnn he is sooo lucky!!! I will have to give that entire article a read Meatball and thank you for finding it for me! If you see Mario Master, please send him my way or to this thread, id love to talk with him on the subject. Thank you both again and I will continue to post here as I find out new things and get ideas on a 589nm build! have a round or two on me hahaha!:beer::beer::beer: ~Adam

"Hey we finally got it in the mail just the other day, it was nice doing business with you!"

HAHAHAH nice one! I wonder what my power bill would look like XD

I am interested in this too! I Love the color. I however like to build my own stuff so. is there anyone out there that sells the diode?

Kinda bumped it there; but for those who might be interested, CNI sells the modules. They'll be about as wide as a C6 (if you have one), so look for a host bigger than that.
That is, unless you can manage to get the same module they use in the GLP's. I haven't managed to get a quote for the latter.

We've managed ways around that plenty of times though

Maybe hop along with the 561nm order whenever that happens, maybe LPF could have an "old fashioned CNI GB" again.

If there was a GB for a laser like the one you have on your signature I would grab one 100%....

When there is a will there is a way!!! I will find it somewhere!

That road is paved with large bank notes. If you have the money you can get some exceptionally nice yellow lasers. If you are trying to do it on a budget, you will have problems. I priced modules before I bought my Rigel-6, back when CNI would sell singles to individuals in the US. It was more expensive to buy a module than to buy a completed & tested laser from Laserglow.
