Hello folks!
I've recently been looking around for 488nm diodes. I never really had any success finding anything less than $1000 (or any company that would reply to my emails at all.)

Then I contacted Semicom Visual a few weeks ago, and promptly forgot about it.
Today I woke up to an email saying that one diode was 75 GBP. That's $100!!! I couldn't believe what I was reading so I asked them to confirm that it was indeed the PLT5-488. It is!!
I've asked Jordan if he can purchase any. I'm sure he will drop in here. :)

Here's a screenshot of the e-mail for the skeptics among you:

I wonder if they've started mass producing then for some other sort of application...

You and me both!

Would be nice to have convenient 488 vs firing up the argon every time... :D

Count me in too. This might make a good GB if DTR can't get any of them.

Good lord:eek:......

Somebody please PM me if a GB happens. I'm going to be pretty busy in a few weeks (back to uni), so I might not be on LPF too much. Otherwise, I'll watch DTR's site.

I'll remember to PM you if it does. I don't think Jordan will be able to resist getting them though... ;)

Any ideas of the output on these? Or is the knowledge limited since it doesn't seem anyone has one.

/edit we could set up a GB if you want to Sta.. I'd be in for one. I need to expand my wavelength horizon.

Datasheet says it's 60mW at 150mA. I'll probably end up running mine around 200mA.

Woohoo, looks like 488 is finally going to be in many hobbyists hands! If these diodes do indeed start to be part of DTR's site I may have to get one instead of the 473 I had planned to get!:)

Thanks for sharing Sta!

You should see if they could drop MoQ to 5 to verify the diode. That way 5 of them could be in testing between us.

Same with me. I've wanted a 473 for months now but I guess I will end up getting a 488 instead. :D

Typically these companies don't like when you try and negotiate the MOQ. They can retaliate by calling you names (in the case of one Chinese company I dealt with) or just not responding. :)

IMO 473 is nothing special. Not to insult anyone but when I got one and powered it on my instant response was ..oh.. . I just don't get why so many people froth over it. Sure, it's nice, but the yellows are 1000 times nicer, IMO. So if you're toying between this and 473, I'd say this is a better bet.

Great find Sta!
A G.B. or through DTR, both ways sound good to me. I don't think finding ten potential customers will be too hard in this case. :D
