Yeah, I remember that thread, and it's not the first I've seen like that either! Life pro tip for anyone that doesn't know - Remove the water from the cooling jacket on any water cooled gas lasers before storing. Or any water cooled things in general really. Water expands when it freezes. ;)

Re: Holy @#$%... $120 488nm diode!!

Hello folks!
I've recently been looking around for 488nm diodes. I never really had any success finding anything less than $1000 (or any company that would reply to my emails at all.)

Then I contacted Semicom Visual a few weeks ago, and promptly forgot about it.
Today I woke up to an email saying that one diode was 75 GBP. That's $120!!! I couldn't believe what I was reading so I asked them to confirm that it was indeed the PLT5-488. It is!!
I've asked Jordan if he can purchase any. I'm sure he will drop in here. :)

Sounds almost too go to be true. You better check with them again to confirm because it could have been a typo and really is 750 GBP not 75 GBP---that would be more in keeping with what everyone else is charging for the same OSRAM part number approx. $1200
HAve a look here: PLT5488 Price, Distributor, Stock - Alldatasheet

DON'T RUIN THE DREAM MAN!! :(:shhh:

I asked him before to confirm that it was 488nm and that the pricing was correct. So I don't think it's ruined. :D

I'd have to buy more than one of those :)

Yes, hello. I'm at SELEM but heard about this earlier.

I'll be buying two if the wavelength is confirmed.

How come every time I buy a new diode a cooler one comes out??? Seriously!:banghead::banghead:

Just bought an 07E with the little bit of money I have saved up and now this comes out!
Gah!

Either way excellent find! :D

Whoah cool, 488nm from a diode is pretty unique. Looks to be extremely cheap seeing as it's not common to get 488nm from anything under $1,000. (Though unsure about gas lasers, haven't even touched that territory :p)

Edit; Yea I'm forced to agree with Encap though, I don't see why they'd have the price so low compared to others vendors of the same diode. But damn if this really is that low of a price, that'd be quite the show! Hoping it's not an error.

Re: Holy @#$%... $120 488nm diode!!

So I guess nobody is going to take a chance and try to buy one?
I wouldn't be regretting buying an 07E at all as we are talking apples and oranges as far as im concerned. The color should be immediately apparent not to mention 10x the output. I would most likely build mine into a pen for the first one to go with my pen collection. Kind of see my pens as a seperate collection from the rest.
Good to see members having something to talk about again. We need some more reasonably priced visible beam diodes with other wavelengths more than just the same color with more power.
