The FDA is the organization that regulates lasers in the US...it's been that way for a while. Those <5mW pointer limits are imposed by the FDA.

First of all, it appears to have been cleared today. Hopefully this is correct.
The FDA deals with medical devices, and lasers are used in some medical devices. Therefore the government considers lasers to be ruled by the FDA. Personally, I think that the agency regulating lasers (if any at all) should be the ATF. They at least have dealt with firearms and safety thereof and would at least have some kind of relevance to laser safety.

The FDA regulate medical devices, so it makes sense to have the FDA handle lasers instead of creating another division to do it.
Certainly makes more sense than the ATF or something.

The government is ruining small businesses with all their regulations, it absolutely makes me sick that small business owners need to jump through all these hoops just to get a few products out the door. I agree safety is the number one priority but big business leads to expansion which means more jobs and a more stimulated economy. I choose between freedom or security before I choose regulations, but thats just my two cents.

Yesterday while going over the 2877 form noticed that it said in the fine print that an approved form would be good for 12 months and could be reused as long as the item was in the same product family. I had one from earlier this year that went through for some Osram diodes and sent it in. Figured I would throw it against the wall and see if it would stick. Have not heard back but it is saying customs status complete so it looks like it cleared. Weather that is what did it or not I think we are good. We will see next week.:beer:

Honestly, it seems like shipping is the biggest hurdle when it comes to getting fancy new wavelengths. Just look at what happened to the 561nm GB for instance.
I wish there weren't so many regulations so that we could have some suppliers in the US or Canada.

Agreed, beautiful cyan wavelength only found usually by an Argon. That makes for some fantastic beamshots.

I have been keeping an eye on this thread as cheaper 488nm diodes is a huge positive for most of us wavelength lovers.I, as well as many others will be very upset if these turn out to alternative diodes.
