I created this thread so people who have gotten a grab bag from him can discuss the diodes they received. Feel free to post any kind of info you come across for the diodes :)

My diodes: arrived packed in a nice anti-static bag. All 9mm cans including one that was open. Mostly 808nm, some longwave IR, and two red diodes. I've already tested one of the two red diodes, slowly increasing the current I got a big flash of red light at 1 amp of current - then LED :'( I'll wait until I have better equipment to test the second red diode.

The 808nm diode I tested works great, outputting 930mW at 1.05A (haven't pushed it farther, but do plan to run a few into the ground and see what their limits are ;)

I think mine might get here tomorrow USPS willing.  I was hoping today      I'll post as I get data. I've always gotten good stuff from Chris.
I may have to get a 9mm end mill!!!

daguin in your pic here what is the diode all the way to the left, and what are the two all the way to the right?

It's a TO3 package, just the same as any other diode but with a different housing style. The one on the right is just an open can 9mm

Hi

I'm planing to get a laser diode grab bag to , how do you tell which is positive and negative and what are the majority of the diodes in the grab bag rated at (output power)

thanks

Is there anything like a "socket" for these 9mm Diodes so that i mustn´t solder them everytime ?
I also plan to buy one grab bag and a green TO-3 ;D

Just trial and error. I've found that the diodes are mostly case positive.

The voice of experience here- DO SOLDER YOUR LASER DIODES IN A CIRCUIT!!! DO NOT USE A SOCKET unless testing with a REGULATED POWER SOURCE fed through a resistor.

You can use a 10 ohm variable resistor with a 1/2 ohm resistor in series with a 4.5V power pack ran through an amp meter for testing most of these.

The reason not to use a socket for long term use is that a socket can loose connectivity momentarily and the safety capacitor can charge up then reconnect blowing your diode up. This was a big problem with the coherent VERDI series lasers.

I've turned a couple of my 9 mm ~808 diodes up to 1 Watt on my meter.
~ 1.8 Amps. A bit difficult to focus with a merdith glass module.

1.8A!? That's quite a bit for 1W :-/

That's right -- I'm surprised too but that's what I'm reading.  I have more to test yet.   I have no way to tell 800 from 808 or 815 nM but it is a dim visable red. The merdith lens may not be grabbing all the output from the diode.

Mike

I found one -- 1.1 Watts at 1.65 Amps.
