I've gotten three grab bags so far, and I haven't found one yet that is NOT case positive. It is possible that some are, but I have not found a red one either.:cryyy:

I just test using 200 to 800mA of current.

I also test them before with a multimeter to check polarity and voltage drop. Normal voltage drop is around 1 - 1.3 volts. Occasionally I find one with a very low voltage drop(0 - .3 volts), or an open circuit. These are dead or weak.

Hell ..... i just seen now that heruursciences said he don't sell anymore here ..... well, it's the story of my life, i always find interesting things when i'm too late :p

Ah, well .....

I totally know how that goes.

By the way, he's still selling, just not here. Why? I don't know. His reasons don't really make sense...

He was selling too cheap, he can get better money on ebay by auctions than those funny prices here.

The diode test function on your DMM is very low current and I've never damaged a LD using that feature. It does sorta give you an idea of junction voltage though I never trust that.

So far, my 9mm diodes are mostly deep red. If I try to push them over 1 amp, I usually get a red LED :-( Several have hit 800 to 1,000 mW.
I'm using a Merdith housing with single glass lens and I may not be getting all of the output. I have not made a green crystal stack light up so mine are likely not exactly 808 nM but they will burn stuff up close.

Strange, I got lots of 1w 808's in my bag. 1w diodes should lase at >0.2A and output over 1000mW at 1.2A

I didn't get any that were over 1w in my bag unless they were one of the QCW diodes in which case I probably just burned it out :san:

Also strange, most of mine seem to have lasing thresholds from 400-600mA. A couple of them seem to have a threshold at... 800mA? And a couple more seem to have a threshold at about an amp. At first I thought these were just weak, but Boston Laser says they have 20W Pulsed 9mm diodes that have a threshold at 1 amp. Interesting...

I hope it won't happen to me, I just ordered that bag for hope to get mostly 808nm's (atleast 3 or more, to be ahead).

My laser goods arrived yesterday! I must say Chris (Heruursciences) really spoils us with some fantastic stuff at great value.

My C-mount grab bag: I quickly tested all 20 diodes @ 1.1A. NONE were DOA :) Some looked dead but when I viewed them through my digital camera I saw many IR photons.

Three C-mounts really grab my attention. One was a high power 808nm. I know this because I placed a DPM crystal (from a green laser pointer) in front of it and got some serious bright green output. 100mw+? I can't believe I paid $900 for my 100mw green laser in 2001. Now I can produce it so easily. Going to be a great little project to build.

The other two are BRIGHT RED! I'm not sure what the output must be because I dont have another high power red laser to benchmark it against. But it shone this really bright red stripe across the ceiling. I dont have a fast axis lense yet so I couldn't focus it into any useable beam.
Any ideas on power output? Remember I driving it with 1.1A. Could I drive these c-mounts with 1.5-2A? Mmmm

My YAG looks good but I'll only play with it once I have some goggles at that wavelength.

Then! My 15 watt 808 fiber laser! Great one Chris!
I couldn't control my excitment so I crank the power to MAX and burnt some thick, hard black plastic. I brought the fiber a little too close to the plastic and it MELTED and CRACKED the glass output lense on the fibre cable :( My bad!
Hopefully I can remove the broken lense from fiber and replace it.
I was just about to pump my little DPM with 15watts 808nm to see what happens. Remember the time when DPM crystals where so expensive we'd never dream of pumping 15 watts into them. And now I have ten of these DPM crystals lying about. To be continued....

Now I'm waiting for my 2 watt red laser to arrive.....that'll be fun!

Happy lasing!

15watts doing the dirty

Here's an attachment showing the 808nm 15watts burning some plastic.

Remember to wear your safety goggles when viwing this clip :)

I had to rename the file extension to mpg to upload it. If it doesn't work on your computer rename it to mp4.

It is in MP4 format. You may need a codec

BTW the clip above is after I burnt and cracked the lense of the fiber. I'm sure there is much output lost now.....but it still does a fine job!

Just an update. This weekend I decided to try pump some laser pointer crystals with some high power 808nm. I focused about 9 watts into 3 of these crystals and all I got was a momentary green flash....then nothing. I wasn't convinced destroying the first crystal so I destroyed another two..I could see hairline cracks on the surface of the crystals. Guess I was a little optimistic...

I hope you IR freeeeks know that those high power IR's contribute to global warming by toasting the air. .. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :)
