Gus --

Remember too that you are looking for shorts at 170 volts using 3 to 9 volts on your meter. I sometimes have to use a Megger ( hi voltage ohmeter) to look for crap leakage shorts.

I'm hoping for someone else to jump in here. I only have 14 reps!!! I can't be of much help ;D

That's a very good point. I guess I'll have to get a beefier ohmmeter if I tear this thing apart and cant find anything.

How do I shrink the pictures so I can see the whole area?  Scanning is confusing.  What is this supply??  Maybe I have one here.

A lot of those coils look like chokes, not transformers. Does that in line fuse on the rear chassis blow out ?

Ermm... I'll have to resize them. Or you can put your monitor resolution higher hehe.

The power supply is a cyonics/uniphase 2101-40MLA, but I think all the 2101's should be the same inside for the most part. Here's a picture of it from better days... when it was working :'(

Gus --

Our supplies are somewhat similar inside. Not much but the main power switch is a breaker controled by some signal source. It has a 120 volt in/ out but the other wires control the breaker shut off. I don't know what is running that part of the circuit.
Is it the ON/OFF switch kicking out?

Nope the breaker in my actual house is blowing. I dont think my on/off is a breaker, but I do have an additional 3A fuse on the front panel that hasn't blown.

That power switch on the supply is controled by internal circuits - like over temp. The 3 amp fuse is for ???? No Idea.
WE NEED A SCHEMATIC !!!

If the house breaker is blowing, it's gotta be in the input circuit.
I read 10 ohms Line to Neut with the switch on and ZERO L or N to case ground. That's with a 9 volt ohmeter.

Our supplies are quite similar.  That On/Off switch has Blue/brown power leads and smaller black brown +,+ leads for control.  I have a plasma cutter with similar control.  I presume the house breaker blows when the white power switch is turned on.  The problem may be simple but a bastard to fix.

Is your house breaker GFI ??

Not sure if the breaker is GFI, but I'm not on a GFI outlet if that matters.

Is it possible that the switch itself could cause the short? Maybe I'll try pulling the leads and connecting them directly to see if the breaker still blows. Also I'm going to power it on without the main filter board plugged in to see if that works. The fan should still power up so that will tell me if it's working.

finally some progress!!! :D

When I disconnect the main filter board (the ac runs two places, straight to the filter board and straight to the big transformer) the breaker doesn't blow!! So we're finally narrowed down to somewhere on that board. I'll keep tinkering and see what else I can find.

Here's an interesting find. Ok, so EVERY SINGLE CAPACITOR I've tested, I can measure a resistance across. This resistance increases as the meter adds voltage to the capacitor. BUT!!! there is ONE capacitor that WILL NOT give me a reading at all. No matter what I try, I get no measurement from it, as if it were an open circuit inside. Could this be the faulty capacitor I've been looking for? Could a break inside be causing the gauge to not register resistance with the small voltage of the meter, but at 150V be turning into a short??

Any opinions greatly appreciated.
