Help on 5W, Too good to be true?

Sigh... another newbie low-baller who doesn't do any research of his own, asking about some too-good-to-be-true garbage on eBay, and just wants to burn stuff. This is not what the hobby needs.

Sigh... Another low life who just like to mock people when trying to get help... This is not what this forum needs...

Doing research? Wtf is this then? I'm researching with people on the forum who knows.. And people assumed it's white nylon when it's not always, I work with them and was looking for a easy way to cut them in bunch without using scissors on a tight space

You just said nylon cord....and some people said IF white or IF clear or IF translucent...because you didn't specify, and, it CHANGES THE ANSWER.

So, w/o the added info, they were left guessing....and, the guess also lead to the application the question is asked within.

IE: The CONTEXT of the request.

For example, burning nylon can produce toxic emissions...and, your application, in tight spaces for example, would therefore make the use of a laser a bad idea.

And so forth.

Thanks for the information ☺
So it has to be more than 1w then? Or is that too low?

Well, first give us specifics. What color will the nylon be? How thick? If you want us to help you, then you have to give us something to go on,
not just "nylon cord that's not always white". The power (and possibly wavelength) needed will change depending on which color you intend to cut.

So, to know your context, is it a cord as described, which implies that its strands twisted about each other, or, is it more of a filament, like fishing line, and, how opaque is it, and, if it can be many colors, what colors, preferably described in terms of wavelength in nanometers for the best answers...

...and, what thicknesses are you talking about for the individual strands or filaments, and, are you talking about cutting ONE of them, or a bunch of them all at the same time, and, if so, what is the total thickness or number of parts, etc, preferably in millimeters?

The other issue, is, at what range, or ranges? The farther away form the laser, the more total power is needed for the same cutting power.

At double the distance, you might need 4x the power for example, and so forth.

It would ALSO help to simply know your application, as that helps to fill in gaps and allow less guess work...IE: What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Maybe just lay out your idea, in full....and, a lot might fall into place.

I've never seen one of those machines but I suspect this thread was started by one of our old friends back again to stir up controversy.

The kind I have seen (I lost $10 in one last year trying for a GoPro camera) are called "Key Master". A YouTube search will show them being played

There is also the HairStylistSlice by
Nandai Bamco®.

Someone asks about this once in a while,
and it is very illegal, like getting
arrested and jail time illegal. Any laser
powerful enough to cut the line will be so
big and obvious, and put on such a show,
that I guarantee anyone attempting this
will get arrested. Think about the cost of
the laser, the legal fees, the days and
months of your life wasted, the humiliation
of getting arrested, harassed endlessly by
police, judges, corrections officers, and
other inmates. Oh, and you will never get
the laser back.

Here are some other threads on this subject.

If they had a 1 watt DPSS 532nm laser hanging in there, I might think about cutting it with another laser to get the prize, but the reality is, it isn't worth it. Employers check for records on us more and more today, my record was even checked by my landlord to rent an apartment from him. The system will punish you for years and years beyond what law enforcement does on their own, just because the record never disappears.

That's right, I too had to pass a criminal background check just to be able to live where I am. Anyone living in the USA should know by now that this is a place where you better not screw up. We have more people in jails and prisons than any other country both numerically and as percentage of the population. China probably would have had more but I heard they execute more prisoners than any other country, no one knows how many. I suspect with our expanding police state that we will soon surpass them in that too.

Yep, you are certainly free to go to jail in the USA, freedom rings for the law, the citizens, not so much.

If this is a legitimate use and you gave specifics it would be much easier to answer you. What color is the material, what size is the material and how far away is it?
