Hey im looking for a good IR laser I found a

Viper Series 808nm
or
Viper Series 980nm

same price about 179.00

Now Im going to be using it for pointing out objects from a distance, for friends to locate using Night Vision Goggles. Distance can be 50 meters to 400+ I understand beam divergence, but If I could put them in a general area like a ridge line or something like that it would work.

I don't want the beam to be visible to people not using NVGs.

Also Would 200mW be enough that if I were to shine this up in the sky people using NVGs would be able to pick it up and locate me, or would I need to get a 400mW

And why is their Viper Series 1342nm 50mW IR Laser Pointer 319.00

I believe the expense of 1342nm might revolve around the fact that it is DPSS and probably there are not many made. The 808nm and 980nm are direct diode lasers and as such are less expensive to produce.

After a little research I found this. It appears the 808nm should work best as it is in the center of the sensitivity band for Gen III NV devices.

I found this website that is selling IR lasers up to 3W!

808nm Infrared(IR) Laser Pointers

I was looking more at the 200W for 50bucks. Is this one of the to good to be true sites?

I noticed the Divergence is <3.0mRad

Now is that them covering their ass? Should I expect a 1.0mRad or a 1.5mRad and if its higher I can't complain because its <3

Would a 3.0mRad have a distance to the beam or would it get to big to fast and not be visible after 50 yards?

3mRad is a reasonable expectation for IR diodes. At 50 yards, the dot would be about 6 inches.

the firedragon seems pretty cool! and a 1W for a pretty low price. Anyone have any experience with their products?

Is this thing really 1 Watt? It seems to cheap. Is it risky to take a gamble on this and will I ever even get it?
