Fluorescent experiments with bluray lasers

I'm starting a new thread on the topic of fluorescence of objects irradiated with 405nM radiation of the bluray laser module.

Here's a video I uploaded on how to make the water fluorescent. The purpose of this demonstration is to show just how concentrated the Dye-Lite product is! It does not take much at all!

Coming up, we're going to make some fluorescent fog juice! Hopefully the fog is also fluorescent. If this works, oh boy! :cool:

Unfortunately it does NOT appear to make the fog fluorescent. I am not surprised though. I'm sure enough ran through to the boiler to get out. I may continue to run this and keep checking. It's going to get hard to see in here! ;D

EDIT: Ran it again and still no fluorescence. :'(

One strange thing though. The bluray laser looks orange in the mirror through the fog! Flashlights have an orange tinge but a laser should not. The greens are still green just weaker.

Dye-Lite;

Is designed to be inert to fluids used in power transmission and lubrication. It's a mechanics friend and can be found at auto/boat stores. A little goes a LONG way.

I was going to play a prank by adding a DROP to a pitcher of water and pour that into an empty (well washed!) anti freeze bottle, turn on a few blacklights to enhance the effect and pour the "antifreeze" into a glass and drink it in front of a group of people! :eek:

Of course in this day and age this is probably not a good idea even with the disclaimer as some freaking emo kid will drink the real thing and then I get sued by the freak's parents! ::)

EDIT: For UV source we use a Microfire Warrior 3500 with the 360nm filter. It's a beast of a source and can find all kinds of stuff.

ummmmm i would definately not reccomend putting ANYTHING into your fog machine apart from fog juice! you WILL find that your fogger will die much sooner! when i say WILL i mean it definatley WILL!! apart from that, great experiments!

You seen that youtube thing where the guy gets the fluorescent juice outta a highlighter? pour that straight into fog juice. might work.
or, rinse the thing with fog juice instead of water. no water involved!

For the fogger - could it be the boiling points. I mean if you have a mixture of alcohol and water, the alcohol will boil off first, leaving a stronger and stronger concentration of water. But in this case, could it be that the dye has a higher b.p. that the fog liquid, so that the dye is sat there in the tank getting more concentrated and will never boil off.

I dunno?!?!?

The dye may be losing its fluorescent characteristics from heating.

I'll try another experiment by superheating dyed water in the microwave. If it's still fluorescent I'll be sure to irradiate when it's disturbed so the cloud from the "explosion" likes like something out of a movie. ;D

The fog juice I got from Target is mostly water with some glycols. The heat may damage the added stuff but I think most of the fog is stabilized water vapor.

If you want fluorescent chemicals, get them out of lightsticks! Those are a really cheap source, and come in different colors too. All of those dyes should react to 405 nm to some degree.

"Fog" machines are probably not ideal for dispersing these dyes, since they run at high temperatures to turn the liquid to smoke... most of them make smoke, not fog!

One option to get a mist of fluorescent solution is to get one of those water atomizers. They are sold as ornaments and/or air humidifiers, and work using ultrasonic vibrations to turn water into tiny droplets. Their capacity is limited, but it's very likely the droplets produced will carry the dye.

PS: Don't spray organic dyes around your living room or something, since many of them will adhere to fabric (clothes, curtains, wallpaper etc.) very well, and are hard to remove. Even worse, some degrade under light and leave colored residue.

Benm - THAT is an excellent idea ! No offense, Nordhavn, but I like the way the blu-ray lasers look all by themselves - I don't wanna turn them GREEN ! :) I love the experiment, though !

you wont be able to get fluorescent smoke out of a smoke machine, because of the way the smoke is made.

as the liquid enters the heat exchanger, it boils off leaving a steam and glycol vapour. the dyelite stuff and any other stuff will leave a residue in the fog liquid, which will not evapourate, but will mess up your machine - making it die a lot sooner.

put some white vinager and distilled water through it and that should sort out your problem (it will clean it)

do this outside and after, run some regular distilled water through it to get rid of the nasty vinager smell out of it.

You have to see it in person for yourself through a long column of fluorescent material. Blue out of the aperture, green in the column then blue out the column. This gives it a very eerie appearance! Also with NUV LED and CCFL's abound in club environments it really gets the mood going. (the d r u g s go a lot further! ;) ) J/K about that part...I'm definitely clean but some of the others...hmmm. ;D

An atomiser would probably be far better. Last time I played with one of those it had petrol in it and was pointed at a bunsen burner. :eek:

Shine a green laser through a bottle of scotch... green in, yellow in the scotch, and green out. The green-out keeps working even after drinking the bottle ;)
