I got a FAP800 - 12W - 806 from ebay. This is a 12 watt module. So far, I've driven it to 3.1 Amps at 1.8 volts.
Should I read only 17 mW at that current? Seems low to me -- I know it needs more current for full power but this seems low but I may be below threshold..

I used 2 PS to drive this module to 6 Amps tonight. I got a whopping 50 mW :-(
Is this still below threshold for a BAR diode array?

Mike, it should be making much more then 50mW @ 6A. The diode is likley dead, they get them from the same dealer here in the Bay Area as everyone else, the fact that they did not have shorting clips indicates that they are likely either dead, factory scrap, pulls, or replacements.

Ben --
He's sending me a new (replacement) one. Hope it works.
I soft started this one and it's an LED :-(

No... But 12W is a pretty beasty laser! Shame to get an LED at such power...

VW1 -- It's under control. Anything you can provide to help or are you building posts?
The new 25 Watt will ship tomorrow.

is he upgrading you for free to a 25W? Can you post a link to where you got it?

Bryce ---

What do you have for a 30 AMP power supply for this? Do you intend to order one?
Why do you ask or are you post building? Sorry if I'm sarcastic but there's a bunch of kids competing here for points with no intention of building something..

I'm in the process of gathering parts for the power supply. I actually just purchased a lens from Chris also, for collimating one. I just need to get the funds to finish the power supply and buy the FAP unit.

it's gonna be huge, but much cheaper than trying to buy a power supply that will do over 30A. A variac needs to be connected before the re-wrapped transformer, I'm still trying to find a good deal on a variac.

OMG -- That variac configuration doesn't have sufficient current control. It is a voltage control system. That variac has to have a ~25 amp rating and one turn is too much.

yea I was looking at 1.4KW units. That should do the trick.

Insufficient control at the low end of the Variac. NO GOOD. It can jump 2 volts per winding. You need CURRENT control.

The variac goes before the rewrapped micro-wave transformer that is shown in the schematic. So if you turn the voltage up on the variac, the output voltage from the rewrapped transformer will be the same, only the current will increase.

Well -- I got a variable 20 Amp supply and Damn-- I'm using a charcoal as a target. I can light that SOb easy at 12 amps. I now need to design an expander. 5" of burn distance isn't too impressive but it's HOT.
