I tried the IR diode from 20x DVD burner. Ran it at 130 ma, was able to cut electric tape. I had it up to 170 ma for a fair while and it still lives. I left it in the heatsink it came in, put that in a short metal tube with the lens from a broken keychain red. Talk about a ghetto test setup, but it worked. Should be fine in Aixiz housing. I'll be putting my spare diode in one. Don't know the mw's of output, but there is enough to cut tape, garbage bags, light match (sharpied mine). Can be fun and worth trying. Do you have IR goggles ? 80 mw of IR, you want goggles. With IR you might not know you had a problem until your eye suddenly doesn't seem to work right. (Sorry I can go on about goggles, was born with bad eyesight)

I haven't been able to find any goggles for 780nm. I don't know what current you should be running it at, but you probably won't get anything over 80mW safely out of it.

You can buy a 100mW 780nm laser module from Aixiz for $20, I have one and it is pretty fun.

is 780nm slightly visible?
i was also wondering this, i thought it was in the deep red, but still visible

but i read in a physics book visible light is 400nm - 700nm so im not sure

780 is slightly visible but its just more 'dangerous IR', than visible light.
just like how 360-400 is UV, still alittle visible, but more dangerous for the eye.
The visible light doesnt like stop at one waveleangth, it fades away to sumthing we can't see.

780nm is visible, it is pretty dim though. 100mW of 780nm looks like a really crappy laser pointer from a distance.

I run mine IR diodes at 130mA and 2.5 Volts.
I cut/engrave everythig black with the cd/dvd focus lens.

It get a little warm, but until today be surviving... so, it´s nice for me.
