It's a measurement of wavelength, 445 nano meters, it refers to the colour of the laser.

Do a little more reading and you could have found that one out

Here's a little image I put together to help, its a modded visible spectrum diagram.

Blue has until now always been somewhat problematic: 473 is a very nice wavelength, but considering the price/mW it is also the most expensive color that cannot easily be made by mixing others.

I think the applications for 473 will be greatly reduced now that 445 is on the market at affordable prices - 473 dpss is still superior if you need the beam quality or its specific color, but other than that it will probably be obsolete soon: For projectors and pointers, the 445 diodes make a much better deal.

Also, i think 532 might suffer the same fate eventually, once green diodes hit the market. Since the dpss process for 532 is so much more efficient than that for 473, this might take a long time though, and they'll probably exist side by side for years in practical application.

I have a single line argon putting out about 30mw of 488nm which is a beautiful turquoise color. The 473nm beam from my old RPL blue-30 is more of a pure sapphire color while I'm guessing that 445nm would be more of a royal blue with a slight purple tint. *prays for WL to actually get me my spyder arctic sometime this year so I can see for myself*

445 at low mw powers appears almost a deep indigo violet color.

I agree with this, next for me is orange or yellow, and I love the perfect tight beam on my DPSS 473nm blue, it's beautiful. I don't like how sloppy most diodes are, my dilda has scatter and my violets are pathetic to begin with, even a cheap and poorly aligned green is better than any diode I've yet to see.

Dang triple post! I love my 473nm lasers. I wish that I had a 1200mW 473nm instead of a 445nm. The color is more blue and less violet. It is weird, when looking at 445nm the spot looks pretty blue but the scattered light around it looks violet and many surfaces. Even the beam looks more violet compared to the spot.

why couldna casio buy a cargo holds o' 473nm instead o' 445nm i guess on accoun' o' 't would cause problems but 473nm be better me hearty has a 5mW 473nm an' cni sells a 13W 473nm I`d be lily livered t' e'en eyeball th' beam on that

473nm DPSS lasers don't work anywhere near the same as 445nm laser diodes. The differences (size, heat generation, complexity among others) mean that 473nm lasers would never be practical for use in a design like the projector the 445nm diodes are being harvested from.

I like DPSS too but th' thin' that I do nay like about DPSS lasers be that they be havin' lots o' problems (EX: Mode hopping) an' that`s why diode lasers be better but DPSS seems prettier.
