Default DIY IR New-Wish pen

Firstly, DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU HAVE THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF THE DANGERS OF IR!!! AS WELL AS BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF DPSS SYSTEMS I will NOT be held responsible for any injuries due to a lack of IR understanding, and this is a warning to NOT ATTEMPT.

That being said, let's begin!

So the other night I was tinkering with a New Wish greenie, this thing puts out a MAX of 0.25mW, it's junk. So if it was dead for good, I'd have no hard feelings. I was messing around, I knew there'd be some sort of crystal assembly, and I was expecting to see that. After getting the top lens out:

I looked and saw what looked like a glob of melted plastic, or dried hot glue (not pics were taken as this was still the tinker stage.) This "blob" was then removed and was then revealed to me as the lens assembly (only title I can think of)

(I'm taking these with my ipod camera and a convex lens from one of DTR's lens assemblies.)
When looking back into the pen, I saw what looks to be the pump diode in a 3.8mm package. I couldn't get a good shot because the lenses wouldn't go that far without getting blurry, so here's the best I have.

I turned it on to find out I was right, and looking at the IR through my webcam, you can see it is an incredible multimode. Look at that bar! And a good majority of it is blocked by the host!

Focusing it gave me a bit more of a dot

Notice the two wings on each side? Not quite sure if that's due to a damaged lens or diode, or what it is (any ideas?) Also note the excessive production of lens flares, I am going to assume that is from the camera not quite registering what the IR is.

So all in all, I'm happy with it, I produced a pretty cool IR laser (with a BARELY visible DEEP red dot) from a crappy pen that really wasn't doing it for me in the first place, and was never used. It melts electrical tape, although I'm not too interested in it's burning capabilities. My camera sees it VERY well so it's fun to watch the bright dot from my computer screen. Here's the finished product (doesn't look much different)

And of course, an obligatory beamshot (using a smoky bottle)

I hope ya'll liked my "build" if you can even call it that, more of a mod. As well as perhaps answer this question, what output are the IR pump diodes in these crappy ebay pens? Just a ballpark estimate. It doesn't burn through, or even smoke electrical tape, just melts it. Even when focused. So any help would be appreciated

Thanks for answers and for viewing! Take care!

Since you measured the output of the pen before taking
it apart.... What did the final IR output measure on your
LPM....

Nice mod
I am thinking of doing the same to my
~50mW ebay pen but i should
buy some 808nm glasses first

I didn't lpm it, but to put it into perspective, my 1mw 632.8 HeNe is brighter than it. It doesn't "throw" any light, just a green circle, not even a full circle. This thing wasn't doing much at all. It's was just a guestimate.

Thank! And good idea Jim =]

The diodes maybe 50mW but my diagnosis is that the lens is gone bad.. i would estimate a ballpark output of 32~35mW if it melts when focused.. The loss in output is due to the bad lens or could be some other (never opened a green laser)..
I would'nt try this if i were you.. There will always be a hole in safety, I am paranoid about IR anyways!!
And did i say nice macros..!?!

The time between taking it apart, and turning it into a usable IR laser was a little over a week, for some reason it didn't click that it could be a decent IR pointer. I also agree not to try it (hence the top part of the thread ) it can be dangerous, I did all work without batteries in just in case I hit the button, didn't want to get blinded. There are a few things here that could go wrong, and I really don't recommend this unless you have full understanding of IR. I NEVER shine this at ANYTHING reflective. My hand, desk, desk, walls, and carpet. That's it. You need to realize that you could get hit with this without seeing realizing you were crossing the line in the first place. I don't ever see myself purchasing a high powered IR pointer. I will however make a ~200mW IR pointer from the 7890nm diodes found in 815 sleds. Beyond that, I want to distance myself as far as possible, this is dangerous stuff folks.

Also, to the macro compliment, thank you sir All done with the itouch 4 and a handful of convex lenses from the DTR lens assemblies FOUND HERE and they're even good for getting decent high def pictures that are not macros. Just get a lens that doesn't bow as much and it makes it so very clear without magnifying too much. They're great to have simply for that reason alone, plus the dichros, I love this purchase
