CD Burner Laser

I want to use the infrared laser out of my old cd burner for a wiimote whiteboard. Since the wiimote can see infrared, you can use an infrared pen as a mouse on any screen the wiimote is aimed at.

What I want to do is use an infrared laser in a gun type controller to just "shoot" at my projector screen from across the room.

Is it possible to decrease the power of an IR laser like that or somehow make it safe to aim at my wall without burning my house down or blinding myself?

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to lasers. Any help is appreciated.

a CDRW IR diode is not gonna burn your house down since they're only around 80mW, just grab one throw it in an Axiz housing and hook it to a driver. 75mA or so is probably plenty of power for what you intend on doing with it

what's a driver and what kind should I look for?
