CD Burner Diode

I harvested an IR Diode out of a CD Burner and was wondering, is it possible to use it in a laser? And if so, would it burn anything? The case said class 3B Laser while burning, but am still not sure. Also, how much current would i need to run through it?

Don't CD burners use red diodes? (~650nm)

It uses to have 780nm diodes of power 100-150mW.

Well, if you get it from 52x, I believe you can give about 200mA to it, will burn pretty nice

But remember,
Voltage drop on those diodes is about 2,3-2,4v, where 655nm uses to have about 3V.

I believe only DVD Burners use Red diodes, that is why a dvd can hold more info, as the wavelength is shorter.
