Default Calling all 473 owners.

Hello fellow 473 owners. I have a question for you all. I noticed that when my 473 is getting low on batteries and I move the laser around a lot to make lines, I notice a thin pink outline around the blue dot. I know I'm not going crazy because my GF has seen it also. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, what is going on in there that could be causing this? Thanks!

I wonder if it has anything to do with the IR. I know IR appears to be dark red and not pink though.

Doubt it, not directly anyway. It's like a hot pink color. Have you noticed this?

Oh I got it now, its just your eyes. Stare at something pink for several minutes then look around and everything will be green. Its the same phenomenon. This is all just a guess though.

I saw that on my Aquarius...

Not an expert on the subject, but my guess is that it has something to do with the fact that it is a pulsed driver.

My RPL is constant current driven, and does not show this...

I dont have a 473 here, but i suppose the best way to get to the bottom of it, is to try if you can isolate the pink line when the laser is doing that. Perhaps you can use a CD as a grating to split the colors. You could also attempt to make a movie or photographs of the phenomenon.

I really can't think of a mechanism that would cause a 473 to emit anything that could look pink. It might spill a fair amount of 808 and/or 946 nm light, but both would be invisible.

Perhaps its an eye trick as suggested where the certain decline in blue light makes everthing else appear pinkish, though i dont see why that would be pronounced near the remaining blue spot.

Mine does something similar to this though. What I've noticed is that it seems like it can't quite make it's full power and is barely above the lasing threshold just before it comes all the way on being blue. The sub lasing threshold color is kind of pinkish, it is possible that it could be doing this because that sub lasing threshold light is non-coherent, so different rules apply 9if I understand correctly anyway).

I absolutely have seen this. Exactly what you're describing - a 'pinkish' component to the 473 - but only sometimes.

My Aquarius Pro 473 is CW (not pulsed) so it's not that. But I've absolutely seen it. I wonder though, is it maybe -- due to the fading battery life -- flourescence of the surface (Which can happen at 473) finally getting 'brighter' than the laser emission itself?

I have a pulsed 473nm, but I only run it on fully charged batteries. I only run it for a few minutes at a time, so I can't say I've ever seen this phenomenon, sorry. rob

I know I've seen a "after image" that was pink it's due to the eye being overwhelmed by blue I think, I really don't think it goes away with full batteries, and I see it best when dot is moving rapidly, just behind the dot. -Glenn

Look at the dot through a diffraction grating, if you can see a red line/band it means the the laser really do emit pink. If you only see a blue line, then the pink is just an illusion.

I think it is an illusion, because I can't seem to catch this phenomenon on film. I was thinking it's some sort of fluorescence because on certain woods without moving I notice the pink. I will see if I can take a picture of that. This is so interesting/cool!

I think it has something to do with the burn in time of your eyes... Remember we see a laser as a solid line when swept from side to side because the image is still burnt in our eyes. I know I get a similar effect with a green laser... when swept across a wall I can see a very faint greeny-pink colored line still remaining on the wall. I think this would look amplified at night when your pupils are dilated and at lower power.

Does it look like it is around the dot of the laser... or does it trail behind and fade away??

Just a guess -Adrian

It kind of looks like a very thin aura around the laser. It's weird, it's not always observable. I was just playing with my 473 a few mins ago.
