976 nm diode

At full magnification, that diode looks like scrambeled eggs. You need to give it some power and watch out for the beam. It is likely well diffused over a couple inches.
If you are planning to make a 488 nM, it will be one helluva project.

You need a BBO crystal and an OC mirror to make the blue beam, also you need to indium solder them to a massive heat-sink. I could sell you these items cheaply, as it's not a project for the feint of heart.

I've got the Induim solder and heatsinks. I have a bunch of Invar heatsinks perfect for this.

Only problem I seem to have atm, is the polarities given seem opposite from the polarities actually printed on the substrate.

Also one of the wirebonds from the fly-lead was shorted to the base during shipping. So I need to reattach that.

I'm in no huge hurry to finish this, will get the OC and crystal at my leisure.

Beam is emitted from the top I believe. You'll need an external OC mirror ( Mentioned in the description ) in order to get that LD to lase - without it it's just an expensive, powerful, IR LED.

Good luck with the project ;)

Yeah, stupid me found that out, when I looked up what VCSEL means.:wtf:

I've got an OC, I just need to get access to a wirebonder to redo the wirebonds.

A company I used to work for has one, I will try to get a few minutes on it.

Not to be picky, but VCSEL doesn't need the OC, the chip has both HR and OC.

Good luck with getting it running though, looking forward to seeing your results. It'll be a fun project :)

Trying to confuse me? :)

No, the diode you have is a VECSEL, not a VCSEL ... they key difference is in that extra "E" ;)

A vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-laser (VECSEL)
A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)

That external cavity is why you need the external OC ;)

Fascinating stuff!

Ile be watching this one, keep us updated....pictures

Good Luck

Cheers
