Hello fellow LPF members,

This is my 2nd time building a hand held laser pointer. (My first build was the The Green Bullet <<<Link)
I bought the laser diode alone from Ebay China Electronic Dealer
HLD80801WH4T IR Laser Diode (Attachment is the datasheet of the IR Diode)

and the rest of the host assembly + accessories from Survival Laser
Bargain No-Diode Host Bundle
With the following options:
- Host Option: S4
- Driver Current Option: 1.25A
- Heat Sink Option: Extended & Tapered Length Copper
- Driver Pill Option: Standard Aluminum Driver Pill

Not forgetting:
- Copper module for the 9mm IR diode
- 9.0mm Diode Press
- Céramique 2 Thermal Compound 2.7 grams

The shipping took around 2 weeks and this time I choice Priority Mailing and
the packaging is amazing compared to the First Class shipping.

^ I got a Survival Laser 1,000 Lumen Flashlight- 5 Mode for my personal use as well
^ 808nm LD from LillyElectronics

^ Assembling the 1.25A Driver into the ring and pill as well as changing out the stock positive & negative wires/leads.

^ So I made a mistake soldering it the respective pins. I fitted it all together and realised that the laser pointer isn't working. So I begin to think that this was a failure and suspected that I either killed the diode or the driver while changing its stock wire.

^ After reading the forums and googling for answer,
I realised IR diodes are CASE POSITIVE and
I was using the wrong pins on the diodes and quickly did a trial-and-error. I'm not sure why the LD didn't die from my mistake though. I had to re-solder the negative lead to the top pin as well. (I do not know why though)

^ Using a single 18650 cell seems to give the same amount of burning power compared to using 2x 16340 cells.

My Feedback
Out of the lenses I tried (G7, G2, 3-element, 2-element)
The G-2 lens burns the best.
The 3-element has the lowest divergence.
Remarkably low heat production.

Question:
I have read on somewhere saying IR diodes are excellent at burning things that are really far away. How is that possible when the divergence of this diode is really bad even with 3-element lens? Is there a proper lens meant for 808nm that I don't have?

Good job on the build I'm just not into the IR diodes unless it's behind some crystals to make a beautiful 532nm beam.

+Rep for 2 good builds.

Remember to wear certified safety goggles when operating that infared laser. Nice build btw. +Rep
