589nm and IR

Feel dumb asking since I own one. I think 589 is DPSS. Does it put out IR? Do they need a filter? I would think if it did, Dragon lasers would install one.
Searched around the forum. Probably the answer is there somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Yes Dragon Lasers 589nm are DPSS. I don't have one but a few people here do. I just looked at the Dragon Lasers site and it doesn't say anything about an IR filter, but in the customer feedback there is a comment that says there is an internal IR filter, considering the price I would expect them to have one.

Ways to check
IR card- shows/glows IIRC when IR is shined on it
LPM take a reading then a 2nd one with your safety glasses between LPM and laser- most of any reading you will get should be IR

if very low output it has an IR filter+

OR take a second reading with an IR filter in place
techhood sells them cheap
but better to buy from great forum member junktronics (Kevin)
right size for your needs..

Here's something interesting.
It actually causes some surfaces to glow bright red if you have blue googles on only.If you take them off you just see the yellow dot. Certain objects like wood must have near IR florescence cause my googles would block it if it was 630-660nmish red. I found this out by accident despite knowing certain red things glow and some blue dyes will turn the beam red. Heck the red overpowers the 589 and i cant see it with googles on. i gotta try this with my camera that pics up ir and see if it's white. Then we know it's probably in 700-800nm.

I just searched "589nm ir" in the search bar, and found quite few good threads.

This thread from ultimatekaiser is one of the best; a disassembly of a PGL-lll-A.
There are a lot of pics showing all the componants in a 589nm, including the IR filter.

Thank you. I reworded my search and did find many posts. Glad I read Ultimatekaiser took apart a dead unit. It was blowing my mind watching him tear it apart

I should post some of my finished units but I can't seem to come up with the energy to do it.

I'm with you I have a whole bunch of things I need to post but I've been too lazy. No I never reassembled it. Though using a couple of parts from it I was able to and of rebuilding a PGL-C yellow. I highly recommend not taking these apartments in incredible pain and unless you know exactly how to do it you're very likely to damage it. I've actually worked on CNI stuff for quite a while...

Hey Pete, I think I'd like to keep both of them ....alive!
I would like to find a slightly smaller dia. module +/- 50mW that I could use for a custom J/L build though.
Here's some popcornop:, but don't hold your breath too long waiting for that video.

@ ultimatekaiser, I'm glad to see that you could at least harvest some doner parts from that project.

the spartan (PGL-M) have a module like my PGL-A in them just a shorter driver. They're actually great for DIYs, not that i'd suggest digging into one without knowing what you're doing though. I extract them for people on request still as well as do repairs.
