Oh if your interested i make the EDC hosts with a custom heat sink and focus adapter or with an option a Beam Expander adapter for a 3X & 10X BE's for the Single mode diode builds'

Then yeah, if a 476nm diode will suffice, you shouldn't have too much trouble with the '480's. 505's you'll need to get them binned, but 502-503nm is doable.

I never saw the setup either. I just was given details of it a few years back... we have some crazy people running crazy experiments around these parts. But hey, can't not be fun

The controlled cooling was by planters. He has a very interesting channel on youtube called tech ingredients.

Singlemode, if you end up buying and binning a massive amount of diodes you can probably resell some here. People would pay higher for a unusually high or low wavelength.

Planters, why does that not surprise me. He does some very good videos, and he is very methodical and proper.

Wasn't planters either. Though you are right, I forgot about his experiments...

I did actually get one picture - a 1W diode was pushed pretty far...

Here is a recent publication, where the authors cool up to -64°C

https://arxiv.org/abs/1607.01347 (it is a link to a preprint server where the authors upload their articles legally for free directly prior the paper is accepted, so totally legal and a great idea). If you plan just to cool a free running diode you dont need the second chamber in the paper (the one with the gratings). Still its a lot of work, but you can operate the diode save and controlled, with liquid nitrogen it is not usually the case).

You did get lucky with the 461nm. It sucks that buying 200 of them at a time is cheaper right now. Just the name of the game. A few years ago people would call you nuts for expecting diodes like these... maybe in 5 more years you'll find steady sources for these more exotic wavelengths. You are so right, the first diode laser for laser cooling of rubidium, I had the "pleasure" to practice with, had a 785nm diode extracted from the first CD burners and tuned with feedback to 780 nm. The had 100mW of power and just came out and were cheap and the only source available. Some Nobel prizes about laser cooling would not possible without the CD industry.

I remember the university group bought 100 CD Burners for the case they won't become popular. ;)

Welcome, Singlemode Laser. It has been interesting to learn what you are doing with these laser diodes. Some of this has been done before, but you have to start somewhere. Sounds like we might have a lot to learn from each other. :)

ZRaffleticket, I got tracking updates on both packages now. I updated the FedEx one with instructions on where to find my mail box. It is scheduled to get here before 10:30 A.M. tomorrow. I won't be able to do anything with it until Wednesday, however. Sorry for the double post, but I wanted you to see this.

Zach, I got the diodes early here for FedEx. Looks like 8 diodes in all. I thought the one coming by USPS might get here today, but I don't think that will happen.

Rich, I was able to get in touch with the post office early this morning and they are going to send the same carrier to look for the 505nm diode you sent me and was misdelivered on Saturday. I'm hoping they will get it sorted out and delivered to me today.
