Hi,

Just to catch up guys, X Boost for the 480nm diode and Nano for the 505nm diode..

Has anybody measured the divergence on these things? At aperture, I'm getting 5mm... and at 30 ft, it is 6mm not counting artifacts. At 71 ft, it is 7.5mm. This is insane.

Edit: Nice pics. Are you running both at 275mA?

Whatever lens paul included. I think a 3-element? Can you confirm this paul?

Those all came with the acrylic lenses included with the modules. They should work fine at these powers. So, nothing fancy at all.

Oh wow. Hadn't guessed that. They are working very well, though they aren't quite long enough to let the focus ring adapter come on it.

Still, 5.5mm at that distance is pretty sweet.

I'm probably gonna swap in the 480.2nm tonight. I can't kill the 474.5 no matter what I do.

Yeah, those acrylic lenses come with a short lens assembly. I had so many to press I just left them in. It didn't occur to me that you'd be using the stock lens. But, hey, if it works who cares.

These are actually a lot cleaner than the lenses I had on hand, so I just stuck with them. These aren't so much about power so glass vs acrylic doesn't matter. To me at least.

I need to order a 20mm module for the 502 I ordered so I might order a few 3-elements then with that...

Yeah, I keep all my optics wrapped up pretty well to keep dust and dirt away from them. Some of those nickel plate brass modules have been in my stock for years, but all carefully wrapped to keep the optics clean. The copper ones I've had maybe a year. Some maybe a bit longer.

Turns out I did have a spare glass lens... this is actually a lot better than the acrylic. No more weird reflections/splash around the far viewing angles. And I can have the focus ring on it. But... it makes the wings and box much more visible. Hm... not sure what one I want to use.

Splash when pointed at black tape... pic is much worse than it actually looks.


Also, giving up on trying to kill the 474.5. I don't think the nano will kill it. 480nm is now in... and I love it. Hopefully sometime tonight or tomorrow I can get some pics :D

I guess I'll be going through many lenses to find the best one for this wavelength. I see you got the strange rectangular artifact with your glass lens, Zach. That's what I want to avoid. My driver should be here by Wednesday and then the search will begin. If anyone has found a glass lens that works well with this diode, I'd very much appreciate the information. :yh:

I don't know if we can avoid it if even the acrylic one shows it, albeit only a little.

Do you see it without the camera to capture this artifact? I was wondering if it is something to do with the camera, but if it's there when just looking at it, then it must have something to do with the optics. It could be a reflection of the emitter on the lens, IDK. Maybe a different AR coating, or different shape of the lens? Like a different FL.

You do see it, but the camera really sees it.

The one side of the spot is visibly brighter than the other at a distance, but it doesn't seem square in shape unless you're right next to the spot. Took me a few tries, but it looks kind of like this. Left side has a brighter area around the spot than the right.

FIY: I've been spectroing a few lasers with an improvised webcam spectrometer and, while the results shouldn't be taken as accurate, my tunable pushed NDB7675 goes from ~462nm (threshold) to ~476nm (2.8A). My incoming 477.5nm diode should be at least a bit higher, then :)

Just to add to the discussion about the normality of the wavelength variation on the 505nm diodes, my two "520nm" lasers spectro'd at 515nm and 524nm (AFAIK both are 520nm diodes). So the variation between 502-510nm should be pretty normal.
