Ok so don't get your hopes up too high but watch this.

Sorry for my bad video. I don't do videos well

Anyway this is not a handheld but is totally capable of being one.

Here is more

The second part of this video is kinda pointless now that I figured out the tec chip But is also a follow up for the one above.

Here is the almost working tec driver circuit It keeps over compensating for temperature.

edit: compensation issue fixed

Update i have gotten a hold of 3 more tec chips. sadly one was DOA. so 2 i guess lol

Nice laser but I wouldn't call that handheld. Maybe small labby.

Just imagine a co2 laser rifle and its not bad to have a big laser if you also have a large heat sink. That way you have more time to use it.

Really cool. That would be awesome to see in an RPL or Herc host. 488 is still one of the wavelengths I have yet add to my collection.

Thorlabs has 20mW for $7,825.00 0___o So "cheaper than thorlabs is not saying much.

I think that would be a good host too. It's big enough to have a good sized heat sink and maybe even some extra lens. I didn't see anything about how many mw your laser is lazerman121.

I tried to look into it for you and found nothing that powerful in that wave length. 488 nm blue laser for bio-medical, scientific resaech, material processing and photo finishing.

I think the diode is rated 490nm or 485nm, usually they're rated in intervals of five. Search the forums, there was a thread about the 200mW diodes last year

I'm on a mac at my school, these things don't like any sort of attachment

Maybe after I get a portable 607nm I might dish out $5000 on one of these... Maybe, depends if I get rich, I'll accept living in an apartment for a few years so I can get every laser I can possibly want

Well as much as I want to be the first one to make a 488nm handheld I have no funds so if anyone wants to give it a shot let me know. Ill sell it if the price is right.

This isn't a diode. This is a DPSS system meant for a direct replacement for single line argon ion lasers. Laser diodes aren't in multiples of 5 anyway, they're just often quoted at that value for simplicity. I've seen "405nm" diodes range from 403nm to 418nm and I've seen "650nm" diodes range from 655nm to 668nm. It's different for every diode, and the value also changed depending on die temperature and drive current.

So that's what happened to those. I remember you selling them. Good luck you have enough to play with to make a handheld. I do have one myself and love the color.
