Anything other than red/green pointers would probably distract the audience too much to actually get the message across. And I don't see why businesses would want to pay $$$$ for a blue pointer, when they could buy a red/green pointer for $$.

I switch up between different colors (only one color per lecture). It increases "interest." It only "distracts" geeks like us for more than a very short while.

Peace,

I suppose it's like anything new though, once pointer production got into full swing the price would come down. I can remember even the lowest power green pointers being over £200 a few years back. The manufacturing would be less complex with it being direct diode too, no awkward crystal sets to align etc.
Give it time, it'll happen.

Who knows, the overwhelming popularity of GREEN LASER POINTERS dropped the cost for about 600 to less than 20! and those use a rather complex optical system! All it would take is someone to start mass marketing blue ones.

Am I the only one that thinks $2500 isn't that ridiculous for a 500mW 445nm diode? Think of how much you would pay for a 500mW 473nm DPSS blue. A lot more than that... I think $2500 might get you 100mW of 473nm in a high quality lab module... if that.  Now, realize that this can be put in a hand-held because of it's relative simplicity (as long as it's a standard 5.6mm or 9mm diode). How much is a 30mW 473nm RPL? Like $1200 bucks? So for just a hair over twice that you get over 10 times the power. Sounds good to me  :D :D :D

Whoa, blue 400mW RPL for $1200? I'm there! :D

lol

Anyway, I reckon these diodes are pretty awesome value, but it would be pretty risky. It still is a lot of money, and it's not a finished product. Plenty of time for screwing up.

Plus, at 445nm it would be plenty less visible than 473nm, so though it would still be blue(ish) it wouldn't be as bright. Though, 400mW...

I fixed it ;D

But yeah... Hell if I had the money I would snatch one up!!! A half watt blue Handheld seems pretty badass to me.

But again, the risk...

Bit of static while you're working and the diode pops... they'd have to chuck you in a mental asylum after that, you'd go crazy :D

I would make absolute sure that there's no way that would happen ;D

I would have the pins shorted, anti-static mat, static wrist strap, anti-static spray all over myself... etc etc ;D

And of course a small army of people to remind you that 'life goes on' after the inevitable happens :)

GooeyGus- BUY ONE! You could probably over drive it a little extra so it is guaranteed to be class IV. ;D
