1W 808nm for night vision

I'm a hunting guide and outdoors men and on big game hunts at night i use a B.E Meyers IZLID 3-WATT
heres a link to there website
B.E. Meyers

If this is being used for training proper precautions need to take place as a 1W 808nm is just as powerful as 1W of another wavelength at destroying your eyesight.

yes my son, no training here, i currently have it pressed into a MOD9 module and start testing today.

Did some testing, at 500mA (35.7% of operating current) the beam is pretty bloody bright under night vision optics....in the day time!

It scares the crap out of me atm because i dont have my OEM IR glasses yet, but they are in the mail and have been pointing the laser away from me and at objects 20m+ away.

Ok so its been a while since ive played with this diode.

I was running 2x of these in parrallel: IR Driver

and was LPM'ing at 150mW?

Now i have built this 1.25A Negative Regulating driver,

Now it only LPM's at 82mW?

What could be going wrong?

Does IR LPM differently to the visible colors? could the Diode be damaged?

it's quite easy to destroy the diode, I have popped a few when I first started building eg. not using a heatsink or incorrectly regulating the voltage!

I have built a couple of 1w 808nm (TO 9mm) without lenses for night vision illumination, they out perform the onboard IR illuminator on my yukon NV set by around 3x, I also have a 3w 808nm cmount with lens, I prefer the cmount diode, I am able to see objects 500m away while lighting up an area 100m wide (without lens) on the darkest of nights, if I use the focus lens and spot the beam I can point out objects around 3km. But I sure would not like to point it at my buddies!
Before playing with lasers I built a 32 LED's IR 808nm torch, the 1watt laser gives better illumination!
So now I am busy building 3 x 4w 960nm (cmount) into maglite hosts for total invisibility, dont like the slight red glow from 808nm
Also have a 100w diode bar for the same purpose, just haven't completed the driver yet, can't wait to "see" the power!

Have you had them LPM'd?

i might change it out, ive got a spare 9mm 1w 808nm, only got desolder/solder 1 wire.

I tested the current going into the driver and it was 1.22A's too.

No I haven't
I just compare each diode's output with my NV, dont know what the actual watts are but you can clearly see if a diode is bust or not, or has lost some lasing power, the one diode I fried stopped lasing and I could clearly see this through my NV camera but the diode still had light coming out, like a bright LED. If I had to geuss its output after I stuffed it up it may be around 80mw or so!

well if it was LED'd with a lens, i could still see beam under night vision, i just switched to another diode, looks brighter, havent LPM'd it yet tho.

What about gutting a cheap 532nm?
If you remove the crystal setup you would have the IR diode, driver, flashlight host, and an adjustable lens.

i don't really come across 532nm lasers down under, i dont think they would be as powerful as the one i built either.

Sweet just seen this thread... SEAL team 6 uses this set up for night vision shooting/sighting.
